Lufthansa Passenger Jumps Off Plane!

Tue Mar 01, 2005 2:32 pm

Have just been informed that minutes ago a passenger has jumped off from the second deck of a Lufthansa's 747 covering flight 497 route MEX - FRA.

According to the ground control, the flight was holding position on or before runway 23L when a passenger opened the door, the slides were armed and he jumped out. Behind the LH 747 two traffics were waiting; a MX 319 and an AM 757.

The A319 was able to do a 180 turn but the 757 requested towing.
The pilot in the A319 advised that the crazy guy was too close to the airplane so continuing with the taxi could be very risky. The LH jumbo reported they would stay in their position for about 1 hour.

I will report any further information.

OH you crazy neighbors to the south are at it again! This guy must have not taken his meds before the flight, had an agoraphobic panic attack, and felt the urgency to flee. That, or too much Cerveza...

I have my scanner on, the controller has just spoken with the LH captain, and he has said everything is controlled, they are taxing back to the gate.

I think he means that it is amazing that we get this information before the rest of the world does because of our aviation connections. I don't think he is questioning your credibility.

I just hope "moron" did not ruin a perfectly good engine by running off the wrong way after sliding out... now THAT would be tragic...

According to the last transmission, they are heading back to the gate.
The scanner in my house has some interference so its not quite easy to get everything. I'm sure we will have much more information regarding this soon.

I know people are unhappy with the lack of PTVs on LH planes... but I could never imagine that someone would get this pissed off!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Seriously now, the second deck of LH's B747s only has F class seats. Do you think this guy was a F class passanger?

Good lord! I didn't think that F-cl on Lufthansa was THAT bad!! I have certainly never been tempted to jump out of the door. Unless of course, one of those buxom Teutonic Brunnhilde's was starting to make advances....now that might be the reason!!  Smile

According to my sources (namely lufthansa.com), LH497 is expected to depart MEX at approximately 12:45 AM local time (scheduled departure was 9:40 PM) but interestingly, however, they expect to show up at FRA on time at 3:00 PM...good luck with that one happening...

They will need to get another packed slide to replace the one that was blown. It should take only a couple hours max to replace and check everything. That is assuming that they have a spare slide in MEX. The blown slide will have to be deflated and then most likely sent back to the manufacturer and they will repack it so it can be used again.

Evacuation slides have not been orange for at least 10 years. They are now silver, made of fire-retardant material.

Previous slides (the orange ones) used to catch fire more easily and/or melt from heat, so these new slides were developed years ago. They reflect/resist the heat and flames, and last longer in a fire emergency.

Also, depending on the regulatory requirements of Germany and LH procedures, they may or may not need to repack the slide. I believe 747-400 have 2 upper-deck slides and so they may be able to depart with just one operational slide up there.

Not sure if MEX has a 747 slide just lying around someplace. Again, the requirements vary by country and airline, but there are procedures written for departing an aircraft with INOP doors/slides.

Interesting story...

The slides on the 747, even the ones on the upper desk are detachable, so I would imagine getting the aircraft back would not entail much more than detaching the slide, getting it clear of the aircraft, then the aircraft could taxi minus the one slide back to the gate, off load the passengers while maintenance repacks the slide (I don't know how long that would take on an upper deck door).
If the aircraft were not full, they most likely would remove the passengers to the main deck and seat them downstairs for the taxi, since I'm not sure of the legalities of taxiing with passengers upstairs with one inoperable slide.

Juan APM, great job and thank you!....Your providing us news like this when it happens is exactly why this is the best aviation forum on the web.

Bravo!

Hi all,

I think they could simply detach the slide and leave with only one slide on the Upper Deck, or if it is not allowed to carry pax with only one slide, they could downgrade F/C pax to J/C in the main cabin and leave with the UD empty.
They would have to do the safety demonstration manually and that would be it.
If the crew doesn't go over working limits and have to stay in MEX, the flight should arrive with only a slight delay.
Regards.

OK, maybe I was overdoing it with the picture. I did add the smiley to demonstrate that I was joking and I do enjoy flying LH. They have always been good to me. However, from there to agreeing that LH have some of the best looking FA's is a step that I will not take....without adding another "tongue in cheek" smiley anyway.

This being said, some of you guys really take yourselves much too seriously. Lighten up a bit.....

I wondered the same thing at first but being that everyone is talking about slides and the fact that it didn't get mentioned in, not only the 1st, but any of the other posts and I would imagine no. I just hope he didn't hurt the plane. Sound harsh? No, harsh would be telling you that I really wish he had done this at FL350.

i wonder if he would have jumped if the slide wasnt there. did he want to top himself or just get off the plane...

closes his eyes jumps out and starts bounceing gently to the ground would be a shock if you were trying to kill yourself

does it take long for the slide to pop out and inflate once the door's open?

from the cockpit - 21:42:03
"Flight attendants please be seated for departure"

in the cabin - 21:42:05
"Meine liebe damen und herren, wier sind jetz startbereit, ladies and gentlemen, we are now prepared for departure"

from the upper deck - 21:42:06
"No, no, no, they told me it wast triple miles... ahhhhhh"
"Goodbye cuel world, goodbye forever!"

from the taxiway - 21:42:09
---- thud, shwooo, "ahhhh.....", thump------

from the lower deck - 21:42:11
"Honey... I think I just saw someone fall from the sky"

"Darling, haven't we spoken about drinking in the lounge before?"

Surely this has to be rubbish. If I attempted to stand up during taxi and then open an emergency exit door, somebody would have told me to sit the **** down.

Did the crew already take their break? Does a door have no 'idiot' proof mechanism?

In a situation like this: can the slide be detached, the door closed, and the plane taxi to the gate?. I am surprised that the crew did not request to be towed back to the gate.
Does anybody know why he jumped (slided) off the plane?. This must be all over the news in MEX.

O.K. Here is an update.

According to the person who's informing me about this and who I thank. CPA Rocha. He spoke with LH groud personal and they told him they took away the slide but since it is required to have it for the flight they borrowed one from AF.

All the people in the plane were transported back to the terminal. Then the plane started taxi to the gate.

BTW the plane is D-ABVL
