Mexicana And Aeromexico

Hello everyone,

Can anyone try to tell me how you would compare between these 2 airlines? Perhaps focus on their in flight service, fleet etc... how are they different in their mode of business?

Firstly, let me warn you that you will read completely different responses from Mexican a.netters because we all tend to get subjective depending on past experiences and personal preferences. Nevertheless, here's my take:

I fly AM quite regularly because I am a DL SkyMiles Elite member. I think AM has great inflight service, with very friendly flight attendants and decent meals. On-time performance is supposed to be a major trait of AM and for the most part I agree. The 73W's are incredible planes; as more and more of these are joining the fleet, chances that you will get one of those is higher. The Mad Dogs are nice (especially the newer 88's), and there is a good number of 752's in the fleet as well. The long-haul fleet is composed of 6 762ER's and one 763ER. While the planes are far from new and have been used a lot, I think they are comfortable despite the lack of PTV's in coach. The best thing about AM's fleet is that 2 772ER's are joining in 2006. I flew AM MEX-ZIH in November in a 73W and it was an awesome flight. Two weeks ago I flew AM JFK-MEX in a 752 and it was also a great flight; flight attendants were really nice and brought as many drinks as you wanted. I guess that you could say that AM is much bigger in Mexico than MX but perhaps a bit smaller abroad (although AM has the coveted routes to MAD and CDG). You can also say that AM is perhaps more oriented to the business traveler, whereas MX is more oriented to the leisure and ethnic traveler. AM has mileage agreements with all its SkyTeam partners and also with LA (in the MEX-SCL route), with MX, with JL (in the MEX-YVR route) and with UX (in the CUN-MAD route).

MX is quickly becoming an all-Airbus operator. They have Latin America's largest A32x fleet and they will be soon operating the 4 variants (2 A321's will enter the fleet soon). In addition, the MX flight attendants are also really nice and friendly. MX offers a lot of codesharing and mileage partnerships with carriers such as AA, IB, LH, RG, AC, CM, MX, NZ and others, so chances are that if you take a MX flight you will be able to accrue miles for your f.f. program. MX's expansion plans in the U.S. are very ambitious, and I am sure they will be successful thanks to their partnership with AA.

I hope this is useful. As I said first, there will be many different responses, with people with outstanding experiences and with poor opinions of each carrier. In any case, I think most Mexicans (and foreigners who have taken AM and MX) will agree that the service levels of the two Mexican carriers is above those of U.S. carriers.

Just like any other country. In England some like BA, some like Virgin. As an American who has flown on both, I give Mexicana my vote.

Ditto. I flew both MX and AM last year....MX DEN-MEX and AM MEX-MZT (admittedly two very different sectors in terms of length and type), and I just found the MX service to be outstanding, very friendly and accomodating f/a's, took the time to help me with my poor Spanish when I attempted to use it or had a question...on AM, they just sort of threw the service at you and disappeared for the rest of the flight...I would definitely take both again if I need to go back to Mexico, but I found MX to be better overall...

I found MX more friendly and with great service while AM a little more snobbish but with a great service too, but both are great representatives of our aviations and make all Mexicans proud.

Well, let me give you my opinion regarding service standards in both airlines. As a FA 4 AM, I can only tell you there is no much difference between both airlines regarding coach in-flight service.

Both serve hot meals according to breakfast and lunch time, as well as in flights over 4 hours. Alcoholic drinks are always free, and a movie will be seen only on international flights and MEX-TIJ (Only B737, B757 and B767 for AM and Almost all Aribus by MX except some A320s). You may ask for as many drinks as you like...

Probably Premier (AM's business class) is a slightly better product than Ejecutiva (MX's business class), specially when considering long haul routes. We do serve better whines and sometimes you may even get better meals (Try our service to JFK, ATL, MAD, CDG, LIM, GRU or SCL on B757 or B767).

And finally, about F/As. If you ever happen to flight in AM and I have the opportunity to serve you, you will definitely have a very nice flight experience. I'm always looking forward to give the most of myself and my airline, have you wanting to fly with us again is one of my main objectives. However, not all of my colleagues think the same. As someone else noticed, some F/As do hide in the galley and some just fly for the 'bucks". But I'm sure those raw apples are also not hard to find in MX nor in any other airline...

What ever your option is when flying MX or AM I guess you will find both excellent airlines, at least until now.

I have experienced both airlines. To be honest i have to say Mexicana gets my vote .The only think I prefer AeroMexico for is the tail logo....I think it goes as far as that! More firendly crew, better service, never losing your luggage are citeria that makes me go for MX

I have flown both airlines and give Mexicana my vote.

Their airplanes are more comfortable, their flight attendants
are friendly and nice and their whole product is exceptional.

Although Aeromexico claims to be a Business airline,
I quite differ in this respect as most of the passengers I
travel with out of Bogota, Chicago, New York on Mexicana
are Business passengers and most from Europe and Asia.

Only on certain city destinations are there more ethnic travel on Mexicana but because they service these cities.

Try flying out of JFK and Aeromexico is basically all ethnic with boxes and problems at checkin and Mexicana in all
rich Mexicans and business people.

My vote for Mexicana but both great airlines.

I've flown both Aeromexico and Mexicana quite a few times and I like them a lot. Both have good service and in my flights the food was decent. The flights have generally been on time, no better or worst than other airlines I've flown. I've used them on flights to and from Mexico and within the country.

I have a slight preference for Mexicana but it's really a minor thing. I have found the people from both airlines to be very friendly and professional and recommend Aeromexico and Mexicana without any reservations.

Extremely close regarding service, but I tend to think that AM is a bit above in key markets inside Mexico, say GDL, MTY, TIJ and CUN both in frequency and service. MX is GREAT in their key markets, ORD comes to mind. AM has electronic checkin at MEX, quite convenient if you ask me.

Mexicana also has check in Kiosks in Mexico City and
I was told Guadalajara and Monterrey and soon in the US.


I also got my boarding pass printed through the internet
for my return to Kennedy airport out of Mexico City.

I checked the Aeromexico webpage and they don't have this yet. Seems Mexicana is really investing in technology.

but i dont understand why Mexicana is stupid enough to leave the star alliance (or stupid enough to do something so that they are kicked out of the alliance)

It's been long rumoured that MX will be joining OneWorld...
study is... MX has built a very close relationship w/ the powerhouse of AA (OneWorld) and IB(One World) is interested in purchasing MX ...

MX is doing a lot better off Star Alliance because it keeps business deals with most of the partners, except for United Airlines. And MX started alliances with LANCHILE, IB, AA and some others also. So it has a larger airlines network than at Star.


About the main point my preference is for MX. AM is fine but from my point of view MX is and does better.
Over 80 years in business say a lot about success

And MX could become the first airline to join two of the three big alliances. I wouldn't call that so stupid.

If CINTRA changed the strategy trying to merge AM&MX, didn't make sense to have AM in Skyteam and MX in Star. Now that is decided to be sold separately, MX must likely will go back into an alliance.

MX was always among the best in *A customer surveys.

MX key market are North America and UA provided very few non-stop options different from MX. AA does provide service to more mexican airports either through mainline service or Eagle giving passengers more options to the US.

Remember, MX transports more passengers across the border than any other airline. Pax statistics show that they hold around 25% market share of the Mexico-US and I believe there are quite many players out there from both sides crossing our frontiers.

NAVEGA, I have actually noticed more ethnic travelers in DL's flights than in AM's flights something I found a bit weird). I have never taken MX MEX-JFK, though. I think AM has in the MEX-JFK route a good mix of leisure travelers, ethnic travelers and high-yielding unrestricted coach pax and paying business class pax whose reason for flying is business. I guess it really depends on the time of the day and the time of the year.

William, MX leaving Star was a great decision and was wisely done. UA was getting a lot more from MX than what MX was getting from UA in return, so MX simply decided to not renew its codeshare agreement with UA and that's how it got "kicked out" of the alliance (its number of codeshares with alliance partners fell below the required threshold). As of now, MX has a very extensive network of codesharing and mileage accrual/redemption partnerships with major airlines from Europe, Asia and the Americas, so I think their strategy is great.

Am001, I am not sure about CO's share. All I know is that in 2003 MX was the leader with 23% or so of the market. Back then, AM was second with around 19%. If I am not mistaken, CO was fourth behind AA. Things may have changed in 2004, though.

Finally, I just want to add that AM is offering killer fares between DFW and MEX in business class. I will fly MEX-DFW-MEX next week (MEX-DFW in coach and DFW-MEX in business) and my firm is paying U.S.$340 all taxes and charges included. So if any of you is thinking about flying this route, forget about AA and go for AM. And many flights seem to be sold out too in coach. I hope AM is making money in this route!

Mexicana was not kicked out of STAR Alliance, they just
refused to renew the Code Share with UAL and left.

This was one of the great decisions of any airline because
if you remember, Alliances were basically developed to
help airlines from going under and to work as teams to
develop synergies that would help them survive.

Now Mexicana has taken a different route and developed
code shares with the most important players in STAR that
really give them something for their passengers and alone
without a major Allianfe they are doning great.

What I am trying to say is that this might be the beginning
of the end of SURVIVAL through a major ALLIANCE.

If they decide to join one, I would hope they join One World.

Both are great airlines. Yet, MX has my vote because of their outstanding FA. They have the nicest and kindest FA I've ever seen, always ready to help you out. For millions of Mexicans living in the USA, the moment they step into a MX plane, the moment they feel already at home. That says a lot.
The only thing worst than the GOP is the Democratic Party, think about it!

As everyone said, both are GREAT airlines, and both, together with LAN and TAM make the best of LatinAmerica.

Even tough, my vote goes to AM. I consider AM much more "exclusive", even flights as LAX-MEX are very different in one than in the other. AM offer a better in-flight service; and their lounges, are a bit better, and bigger.

In terms of fleet, AM has a newer better one, and the cabins are better equiped (145/M88/73G/752/762/763), even every seat in most of their aircrafts are equipped with headrests, and "Premier Class" is a business-first class, while "Ejecutiva" is just business, so AM's preferent class product is better.

Their flights to LIM, CDG, MAD, SCL, GRU, ATL, JFK, BOS, and MIA are the best even compared to every airline flying from those destinations. They offer special menus, (Soles y Especias), while even MX's flights to BOG, CCS, JFK, and EZE are more ethnic-kind flights.

And I don't like very much the A320 family... I prefer the 737NG's, but as I said, I like both a LOT, the F/A's are very nice in both of them, of course, you have the chance of getting rude ones.

Well... This has been a very reasonable thread... I'm really surprised on the civility of everyone...  Smile
Though I could talk about the positive/negative differences in their products, I think I'll go somewhat by the sentimental line...
I think one likes better MX or, as my case, AM mainly for an identification with the brand, which is a consumer experience in every market... It's just like asking: Coke or Pepsi? McDo or BK? Everyone has a reason, an experience, or a background that makes them prefer a specific carrier, which is good...
My memories in AM go back to 88 (after Aeronaves)... Before that, it was all MX... But we (as a family) liked the new trend of Aerovías de México... Which made us do the switch... Overall I consider them to be very, very similar... The first flight in my life (I was 8 months old) was a GDL-MEX (MX), and the return was MEX-GDL (AM)...
I remember great things about MX... Like the public congrat they placed on the papers after AM's restructuring period in 1988 (something like "Mexicana compliments Aeromexico on its restructuring process")... But then some other not-so-nice stuff: the "Solo tenemos una clase: la mejor" (we only have one class: the best) campaign after AM launched it's Clase Premier (which by then was named differently, Clase Elite, I think)... Then MX thought on the "Primera Clase" stuff, which turned out to be a complete economic disaster... Then again, on the positive edge, the PTV's on all the 727 fleet, the first carrier to use Airbus in Mexico... And many other sound memories...
For AM, well, I could make an endless list: a lot of jump-seat flights (in almost all the fleet, with even a couple of rides in the left seat!), my first flights to great places (JFK, CDG, MAD, ORY, FCO)... And so on...
I, for one, enjoy traveling on board any plane... The experience of flying is just something that sets me on my best mood... And I think that's the important part... Whatever the carrier may be...
Currently, thanks to the codeshare agreements, I try to fly as much as I can in both: one way in MX, and the return in AM, to compare them, to enjoy them both.. Then there are the traditional routes for each carrier (for me, TIJ & JFK will always be in AM, ORD & SFO in MX, for example)... so I guess I like both airlines the way they are...
I look to the future and I really hope each one does well, serving their markets and competing in a healthy manner, assuring their long term survival...

I could not have put it better myself AM001... very eloquent. I think that in the global context both carriers definitely belong in the upper tiers. Flying to the U.S. is certainly much better with AM or MX than with a competing carrier from the U.S., and while domestic travel is very expensive with both carriers, most of the time you get great service in return, so it is not that bad.

William, if you do one round trip between two Mexican airports, try to do as AM001 says: take advantage of the codesharing agreement and fly one airline on the way out and the other one on the way back and you will then be able to compare and enjoy both of them.

I'm going to be flying both carriers for the first time next month - Mexicana on the Chicago-Mexico City and AeroMexico from MEX-Hermosillo. I'm very excited about this trip, and very eager to see if some of the differences highlighted here play themselves out.

Are snacks or meals common on Mexico domestic flights? The itinerary shows that MEX-HMO is about two hours' flying time - will I get anything to eat?

In some of AM's, MX's, and 6A's domestic flights, specially if its not a shuttle f/e: AM: MEX-MTY, or MX: MEX-GDL, you'll get full meal, or at least a donnut, snack or sandwich... You wouldn't find much difference between domestic and international flights to the U. S. with these 3 airlines.

Even on AM shuttle flights MEX-MTY-MEX during breakfast, lunch or dinner you'll get a hot meal. Eggs or Chilaquiles in the morning and, pasta or chicken in the afternoon.

HMO flights, well we do serve hot meal, though I cannot tell you at which flight; or, you may get a snack, mostly a tuna or ham sandwich. But I must also say that sometimes you will only get a bag of peanuts.

But, in any case, you will always have nice and kind F/As in your flights  wave

Even though both carriers updated their websites very recently, making them more user friendly, they are still a bit behind the websites of other companies. I like them both pretty much the same but sometimes people living outside of North America complain about the usefulness of the websites. Browse both sites and take a look at their sections if you have a few minutes.
