UAL Flt #3.....ORD To......ORD?

Tue Mar 01, 2005 11:53 pm

Yesterday at work, I booked a honeymoon couple from Detroit to Maui in June on Funjet vacations. Funjet has contracted fares with United, and always offers a good price. I booked the morning flight from DTW to ORD and then booked the connecting flight....UAL Flt 3 from ORD nonstop to Kahului, Maui (B777). After booking their hotel and rental car, the return flight selections came up. I was quite surprised to see that the return flight from OGG to ORD was....UAL Flt 3...one stop. I thought that there might be a error in the system, so I went to SABRE and brought up the intinerary for UAL 3.....ORD-Kahului-Kona-ORD. I am assuming that it is the same aircraft for the entire trip.

I'm wondering if anyone knows of other current flights that leave a certain airport, stop at one or more destinations, then return to the origin airports while retaining the same flight number for the entire flight. I think it happened on occasion years ago (PanAm's round the world Flt #1 started and ended at JFK), but it has been some time since I have seen this. Thanks.

UA1 & 2 were ATW for a bit, but now they are ORD-HNL again.

BTW, if anyone's wondering, UA4 is LAX-JFK.

These are triangle flights, and some airlines use the same number whilst others use double number on the "in-between" legs.

So it's either:
UA3 ORD-OGG-KOA-OGG

or
UA3 ORD-OGG-KOA
UA4 OGG-KOA-ORD

Many regional airlines go the same route -- especially since they may have multiple legs per roundtrip.

America West does it kind of the same, but it doesn't end at the same airport. For exampe, I've seen flight go DFW-PHX-LAS-JFK, all with the same flight number.

I think it was on the departure moniters in LAX that a lot of the OO flights had departures and arrivals of LAX. It's kinda funny to see on the screen (even more so for the passengers on those flights i susspect). Like was said above, it's just easier to use the same flight number for triangle routes.

Delta does the same with their flight from JFK to BCN. DL 090 goes JFK-BCN-MAD-JFK. Same flight number throughout.

This is also done with KLM's AMS-JRO-DAR-AMS flight, I book this flight at least once a week, and it seems that it is the same flight number to and from AMS.

You will find more and more with all of the code sharing that there are just not enough numbers to cover all of the flights, hence this has created roundtrip flights using the same flight number.
DL 90, a winter flight is different that it is a circle trip and not a r/t as is the KLM example.
Example: DL 2038--(Song flight) JFK-FLL-JFK

There are many examples of this throughout the airlines.

IIRC, NW has a flight with a similar routing SEA/OGG/KOA/SEA.
