Continental's 787s

Wed Mar 02, 2005 8:50 am

Why is Continental interested in the 787 if it is very similar to the 777 of which they already have?

It is really not all that similar at all. It is much smaller, has longer range and burns much less fuel. They are also cheaper to buy than new 777s

Your base assertion is off. The 787 has a different mission in mind. It's longer range then the basic 777, has less seats, but better operating efficencies. Think of the 787 as sort of a uber competitor to the 757/767/A300 and A330.

Thread starter: If the 787 was almost identical (both physicly and financially) they wouldn't be making the 787, now would they?! :p

Actually, that is something that companies do all the time. They cannibalize to maintain or better their position on the market. For any business, it's better to do that and still make profit than to forfeit revenue to a competitor. But I do agree that both aircraft are slated for different missions.
