"Artistic" Aircraft Livery

Wed Mar 02, 2005 11:07 am

With the proliferation of artistic aircraft livery, it made me wonder:

What was the first airline/airliner to be painted in such a way?

Braniff, maybe?

Anyone know? Pictures in the A.net database?

Thanks!

Russ
My glass is neither 1/2 empty nor 1/2 full, rather, the glass itself is twice as big as it should be.

Braniff had a DC-8 that was hand painted by Alexander Calder, an extremely colourful aircraft.

It was unveiled at the Paris airshow in 1973. Calder reputedly only finished painting it hours before it was unveiled.

The DC-8 itself was not hand-painted by Calder. Calder painted a model and the crew used the dimensions to re-create the livery on the actual plane. Same goes with the Bicentennial 727.

Calder hand painted his original designs on the engines, the rest of the fuselage, wings and tail were painted by Braniff crew. As this paint faded/peeled several years later, the engines were repainted with slightly different designs by Braniff crew.
Just because I stopped arguing, doesn't mean I think you are right. It just means I gave up!
