NW To Start MSN-DCA

Thu Mar 03, 2005 4:32 am

NW's Heartland to DC routes are growing. First Des Moines, then Grand Rapids, now Madison.

Okay.. here is my question..

Can these flights occur because they are from small cities and can therefore bypass the slot control rule? or are these flights a result of dropped flights from other cities?

I believe NW acquired slots from another carrier that had subleased them. This was not a lottery or anything.

NWA actually has many DCA slots that are not being used. NWA purchased from Eastern most of their DCA slots.

NW has a very, very large number of slots at DCA. They were subleased to other carriers including US and DL, and they must be getting them back.

Doesn't the US Airways shuttle operate on leased slots from NW? Maybe it doesn't but I remember reading that somewhere. Prior to 1991, EA had the most slots at DCA and IRC NW bought the vast majority of Eastern held National slots from the bankrupcy court in mid 1991. NW operated a minihib from DCA for a while but by early 1993 shut it down and began leasing slots.

NW had been leasing 24 slots to DL. The lease ended last year and DL did not renew. NW leased 18 of the slots to US, but kept six for themselves. Also, NW picked up two slots that had been unused by other carriers.

This is such great news! I fly once a year from the dc area to MSN, and frankly stopping in ORD is quite a pain in the ass! What aircraft type will be used? When will it start? And is it already bookable on NWA's site? Thanks :0 this is the best news ever!!!!!

They sure do tease you a bit by first saying that they are the only airline to offer "mainline" service from Madison that includes first class seating and larger bins, but in the next paragraph they say that the flight to DCA will be a CRJ seating 50 people!
