Asian Airlines Flying LAX-SFO

Thu Mar 03, 2005 5:11 am

I just recently moved into some apartments along San Francisco Bay. Every night when I come home from work around midnight, I have noticed some 747 arrivals. Looking on a flight tracker site right now, I saw that Korean Air, Asiana and Cathay Pacific have late-night flights between LAX-SFO, continuing on to Asia, all arriving at SFO between 11pm and 1am. Why would they route like this, instead of LAX nonstop to Asia? It doesn't seem to make sense that someone flying Asiana from LAX-Seoul would rather fly through SFO first, since they do offer nonstop flights to Asia.

Cross-checking the flight numbers at flytecomm.com to the passenger flights listed at travelocity.com, reveals these are most likely cargo flights, especially since the CX flight in question also stops in Anchorage.

Those flights are all cargo flights coming up from LAX to SFO before heading out to either Anchorage or Asia.

Because they can't make it the whole way.

I think it is because they don't have enough range to make it all the way to Asia fully loaded with cargo.

I know Nippon Cargo and Japan Airlines cargo still uses 747-200F for their flights. Cathay and Asiana use 747-400Fs.

Mike77....all cargo flights. Asiana,Cathay Pacific, and Korean all fly cargo into SFO. If you are ever around SFO at between 200a-430a you'll see lots of freighters departing SFO, mostly via ANC to Asia. All the Asia passengers flights depart between midnight and 130a, with the exception of Korean. No Asian passenger flight operate between LAX and SFO unless its a irregular ops of some kind.

MGA,

The cargo flights could operate nonstop all the way to Asia from SFO, however, the payload that they would be able to carry would be quite a bit less than their maximum potential. The extra cost and time required for the fuel stop in Anchorage is almost always justified by the additional amount of revenue that the airline can make by operating the flight at max payload. As for why ANC, it (like Fairbanks) is conveniently located along the great circle route and has runways that are long enough to handle those birds.

I remember being in FAI with really low clouds and watching a Lufthansa Cargo 747 drop out of the clouds, quite a sight in a place as small as Fairbanks

speaking of which anyone know which airlines use FAI and which ones use ANC?

Thanks for the feedback everyone! Those being cargo flights makes much more sense. At night I can only see the tail logos lit up, so I wasn't aware they were cargo flights.

Jacobin777: I live on the Peninsula in Foster City, right by the San Mateo Bridge. I just moved here from Redwood City and began to notice all of this late night flight activity into SFO since the planes come in right over FC and the bridge.

Well United Airline, they just added more US, but not destinations, just more competition to UA amongst others. They just announced a second daily SFO flight and third LAX. So we will see more CX in the USA, but no new citys.

*Though if I read correctly some citys in the US may get some CX cargo flights.
