UK-Egypt Flight Times.

Fri Mar 04, 2005 9:40 pm

Alreet,
Was just wondering how long the flight is on the following UK-Egypt routes:
NCL-SSH
GLA-SSH
MAN-LXR
MAN-SSH
LHR-CAI

Cheers

Well, SSH-MAN is 5:40. MAN-SSH is less I think, about 5 hours. I can't remember now.

When I last flew LHR-CAI, I flew BA (2x 744). The non-stop time was about 4 hours out and about 4.5 hours back.

Our route out was essentially over a part of Switzerland - had a great view of the Alps - over Venice, down the middle of the Adriatic, over Tirana, over/near some Greek islands, over Alexandria and down to CAI.

Next fly AMS-CAI on 8th June on a M11. Big grin Flight time should be a tad under that on LHR-CAI.

Hey Gkirk, the flights vary between 4-5 hours depending on the route and airline/aircraft. Its 5-6 hours on the return Egypt-UK flights

for example...
LHR-CAI: 4hrs 45mins (BA-B744), 4hr 50mins (MS-B777)
LHR-SSH: 5hrs 20mins (MS-A321)
LHR-LXR: 5hrs 5mins (MS-B777)
LHR-HBE(Alexandria): 4hrs 45mins (BA-A320)

I guess for flights from MAN, NCL, GLA, BRS, EMA, etc you'd add about 15-30 minutes.

Don't forget the all-important wind!

Don't forget that the times you stated are BLOCK TIMES - which include the flight time, taxi time, time for small delays, etc - and not the FLIGHT TIMES.

I know NCL-Cyprus is roughly 5 hours, so I was thinking that NCL-SSH might be around the 6-6.5 hour mark?

Or does 2 BY 757s swapover in SSH?

Yeah I was kinda surprised but I think it's achievable. Though you're point about swapovers is possible considering Thursdays (and to a lesser extent Sundays) are 'British' days at SSH with BY being the biggest operator.

TCX take over the NCL flights to SSH this summer (TCX503K/L) with a later departure time of 12:55 and arriving back into NCL at 01:15. Is NCL a 24 hour airport?

Cheers Kirkie!

BTW, do you have any idea why GLA-SSH flights are being replaced by GLA-HRG flights this summer? Considering SSH is by far more popular than HRG with Brits so it seems like a strange move. Most regional airports will have their SSH flights extended to cover the summer in addition to new flights from BHX and CWL.

There's no way a 40 minute scheduled turnaround is achievable at SSH on a 757, especially on a Thursday. The airport and it's facilities are overstreched - we sechedule a 1 hr turnaround in Sharm but rarely do they manage to get it away in less than 1 hr 15 min. While you might get a quick turn somewhere like Palma, after a 5 hour + flight from the UK the plane will require a decent clean, and a lot of fuel, which will add to the turnaround - and thats before any ramp/terminal congestion is accounted for!

Due to NCL-SSH-NCL being shuch a long Flight Duty Period, I suspect Britannia may have "bent" the schedule to show a reduced turnaround time downroute so that the flight can legally be rostered as a round-trip within the CAA FTLs.

Gkirk, according to GLA's website SSH flights (by TCX) will not operate this summer, just HRG.

Crosswind, can you actually do that? i mean 'bend' the rules like that? Seems kinda dodgy..

Anyway I can imagine things get a little hectic on Thursdays. The terminal currently handles the number of passengers it was designed for and a second terminal is being built right now and should open in 2006.

Yea it was, although the new terminal was still being built, well it still is!

Honestly, the departure lounge is just  yuck

I remember as well that the food for the flight was brought over from MAN in the cargo hold and that the sh!ter tanks didn't even get emptied for the return flight.

Pretty appalling since 2 toilets had to get closed off as they got blocked plus the fact the crew were grouchy as hell on the return. Understandable though.

Oh well, it was charter.

Myt332

Well I've never used the international departure lounge (only domestic one) but I have heard it is basic but has all the shops you expect. The reason it hasn't been developed too much is because of the 'Air Mall' shopping centre which is being opened this summer.

This photo shows the 'Air Mall' (building on the left) and the Departure area on the right

I doubt that cos work only began in December 2004. Maybe you visited the terminal before it got renovated. Here is a picture (taken from the plane as we headed to runway) and you can just about see in the background cranes and other machinery...still in the very early stages

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v206/horus333/P1010094.jpg
You can also see one of the Hosni Mubarak's private Gulfstream jets

It should look like this when it opens in December 2005 (not 2006) at a total cost of $55 million:

Hi,

First Choice say in their brochures, that from Manchester to SSH, your looking at 5.5 hours on FCA

Newcastle to SSH also 5.5 hours on TCX.

I don't know you're opinion on brochure times, but I've always found them fairly accurate.

This could be a stupid question, but I've noticed that in the First Choice brochure FCA only operate 1 in around 40 flights from Newcastle. Why cant they operate their own Aircraft?

Is it a case of Money?, Shortage of their own Aircraft or something else?
I've always though about this, so any help greaty appreciated.

Hi SignalOne and welcome to the forums  Smile
First Choice and Thomas Cook have an arrangement at NCL, whereas TCX bases 2 Boeing 757-200s at NCL, whilst First Choice base no aircraft, but First Choice holidaymakers usually fly onboard Thomas Cook a.c.

And yes, the 738's could easily fly Glasgow-Egypt, infact the CEO of GSM has mentioned Egypt in a few statements.

Hey Horus, the terminal had been renovated when I was there, it looked just like the photos in Reply 20.

If you've used the domestic departure area then you've been really close to the international bit. The domestic area is about 1/6 the size of the International area so nothing huge as you can imagine! It does have a few shops but fairly naff. It'll be good when that Air Mall opens, looks good!

Good to see the new terminal has finally started being built as well. When I was there, they just had advertisements for the new terminal on screens around the airport.

Would love to go back to SSH one day. It just blows Spain out of the water.

Do the crew return on the same flight or is a 'fresh' crew brought on? If its the same crew, I guess they get stressed on Egypt flights. I mean flying for around 11 hours (5.5 hours each way) and having around 1 hour to turnaround the plane at SSH, adds up to a 12 hour working day. With AEU increasing their scheduled service from LGW to 3x weekly and adding a 1x weekly MAN flight I guess they can afford to have the crew rest in SSH for a couple of days (instead of the current week) before 'managing' the next flight to the UK.

I've got a picture of the international departure area but the passport contrl counters are sort of blocking the view of the airside shops, but you are right it looks pretty small. I can just about make out an Egyptair Duty Free Shop and a resturant. As for the Air Mall, well they plan to open that in the summer.

Wow, 6.5 hours! That's quite a stretch for a 738 especially since it didn't have winglets.

This photo shows a TCX B752 that had to make a fuel stop in Ostend on its way from SSH to MAN. They must have experienced strong headwinds too.
