US Airways Aircraft Change PHL-MAN And PHL-SJU

Sat Mar 05, 2005 12:25 am

Below is a copy of an email received from US Airways this morning.

Due to one of our AB330 being damaged on the ground last week, USAirways will operate a B767 until Mar 19.

Scheduling and Inventory advise that they anticipate the A-330 being back on the route no later than March 19.

Please note that the change is immediate -- the 767 is operating the flight today.

As a side note, to accommodate the need for this aircraft, the B767 was pulled from the SJU market -- so there are some anticipated inventory challenges in that market, as we need to provide reaccommodations for some passengers

So do they have a spare B767.

If not, what are they planning to do, charter or re-arrange other services.

I do not see why they send the A330-300 to SJU! I mean the load factor is high, but nothing a B762 coud not handle. They should be sending all of the A330s to Europe. I really miss seeing the A330 at MAD!

Or on second thought, once I move back to New York, keep the A330 on the route. I could fly SWF-PHL-SJU!

How did the A330 get damaged?

A de-icing boom at PHL struck the wing. Unfortunately, the operator was injured.

They could switch a B757-200 to SJU.

It has more coach seats than a B767 anyway, (185 to 179). The potential problem is the 24 Envoy seats compared to 8 First Class in the B757-200.

Assuming that you have under 8 Envoy Passengers, then free upgrades, if not then you may need to offer Compensation and downgrade to Coach or offer to re-book them with another carrier, (if available).

The main point is to be prepared.

The 330 flies a quick turn in between Europe services, and carries valuable cargo in its capacious holds.

This is the ultimate aircraft utilization.

They do, as they use them during the summer to run seasonal routes to Europe. Also, given that they will have a 762 doing PHL-MAN, they should have plenty of time to turn it to SJU if needed and get it back for the return.

It is utilizing the plane during dead time. It makes more money flying to SJU, and carrying all the excess baggage and cargo that goes along with it, than sitting at PHL

Alitalia

They don't use the A330 on SJU. The email stated that the B767 was being taken off the SJU route to cover the MAN route

BigOrange

I am sorry, I did not cath the MAN thing.

I have seen the A330-300 opperating PHL-SJU daily before as well as a B762 daily (same days)

The last time I was in Puerto Rico which was in November, I went to SJU daily and saw the A333 and B762 come in.

The most recent photo I could find of a US A333 at SJU was on July 11

BigOrange,

Yes they do use the A330 to SJU. I was there last Sat and there was
an A330 of US getting ready to make the morning departure.
This plane probably pays for itself in the cargo carried SJU-PHL. There
are a lot of pharmacueticals brought in from SJU for distribution to
the Northeast
Cargo doesn't whine, moan, or complain

For those not familiar w/ the Northeast and it's relationship with Puerto Rico. That is a HUGE market! In the 40's and 50's (and now) many Puerto Ricans moved to the Northeast to find better lives...NYC, BOS, PHL, EWR even as west as ORD are huge markets for SJU. So I can see why US would send the A333 for that route and why for instance AA sends multiple A300-600R's from the Tri-State area daily.

US has the A330 regularly scheduled to SJU much of the year.

It isn't just drugs, but the same list of cargo that AA is so fond of carrying. The 333 is perfect for it.

Nasty, guess BMI may be seeing an increase in pax on their flights to the USA, seeing as how the US flights to PHL were virtually full all the time, as well as the cargo on the flight

Cheers

It is a mix of everything. Passengers, that being a mix of Friends and family and many tourists as well, plus all the cargo of many types.

US has one A333 remain in PHL each night for recurring maintenance, etc. Each morning, that A333 makes a turn to SJU, rather than waiting all day to head to Europe in the evening.

Usually, that A333 is routed PHL-SJU-PHL-LGW.

US, in winter also sends a 762 PHL-SJU-PHL in the early morning. It is this plane that is being used for the MAN service, and the existing A333 flight to SJU is not effected.

Just a note. It looks like MAD is back to the A330-300 in the summer season. I think that US always send the A333 in the summer and 762 in winter and spring?

Another bullet and foot experience from US Airways management.

Their MAN-PHL route is their strongest cash performer so which one do they  censored  about with?

That is the one route which should NOT be having substitutions.

I think US Airways has quite a reasonable presence in the SJU... Their codesharing with Caribbean Sun also helps with their loads. I know Sun is benefiting greatly from their association with US Airways. So I guess, the high loads and cargo warrants US using the A330 and the B767 to SJU.
There is something special about planes....

First of all, my thought and prayers are with the family and friends of the worker at PHL. I am glad that US is not taking the A333 of the route though. This A333 route is usually filled and is great for families planning to travel together (really, because of the P@ssport entertainment system). This flight, like described, carries loads of cargo. I'm also glad because I'll be on the A333 flight to SJU next week from PHL!

Take care and be safe!

US runs a 333 from PHL to SJU year round. They throw a 762 on the route as well during to high volume routes. My buddy and I usually non rev over to PHL and then on to SJU for a rum run. The duty free shop gives an extra discount if you are an airline employee. We try to do it in like July when the loads are light. Can't beat it, first class round trip. While they are servicing the aircraft we run doun the hall to the duty free shop, by the time we get back to the gate they are boarding. Takes up the entire day but well worth it.
