From the video, it reminds me quite a bit of NW's WorldGateway at DTW. At least the way that the generic computer-based animation of it is.

Looks quite nice though

ERJ170:

Why is there no expressway link from I-85 to I-540 and the airport? I've driven down from RIC to catch a WN flight and it's inconvenient for me to transit the streets of Durham in route to RDU (and Raleigh)

ACAfan,
There are plans for it, but they keep getting pushed out as nonesential. It would come from about mile 188 on 85 to where 70 and 540 hit

I must say--it is quite ugly now....a big improvement is needed and this is it.

The new terminal reminds me of the WorldGateWay. From the video, it looks like the terminal "dips" a couple feet when walking down the concourse. Is this intentional or a video error?

I have heard that it is due to the lay of the land at the site; it is rather low-lying and shifts. The original terminal C had the same slopeing form moving down the concourse. Foundations tend to shift and can cause damage and cracking as seen in the old Term. C parking deck and the old terminal itself. I observed some of it myself while working there.

It looks alot like any new Intl Terminal but the ceiling reminds me somewhat of HKG.

They've already leveled old gates C1- about C8. I heard the old Term C was 1/4mi end to end, I wonder how long the new one will be?

Ohh.. why would you take I-85 all the way to Durham? Just take it to US1 and take US1 to I-540.. that will take you directly to the airport..

I think it looks cool.. but to me, that moving walkway looks long as hell...

This kind of reminds me of the new central terminal in SEA too.

I'll be glad when they finish so they can star the reno of Terminal A..

The description of it should be very cool.. 4 stories.. arrival, departure, administrative, and observation floor.. very sweet.. and it should be 40 gates as well...

Its kind of sad though in a way to see the old Term C go...for those of us that worked in that Term its kind of like some good memories got knocked down when the building was torn down.

I wonder if ramp tower will be saved...or if a new one altogether will be built. Alot of good memories on level three... Smile

Flyibaby,

I have to say.. from the concourse level, Terminal C looks like CRAP!!! Everytime I fly AA or AE, I just think.. wow.. what a dumpy place.. I hope AA will upgrade their boards with something electronic instead of those speak-and-say boards they have now..

ERJ170....I just checked DL's fligts from MSY-RDU for 3/11. The first one has 7 seats available and the second has only 2 so I guess they are doing pretty well.

Pretty cool... Hopefully the flight will stay around. And I think the ERJ is the right plane for the trip.. the O&D isn't that high, but enough to fill those planes.. pretty sweet..

The new Terminal C will be nice...but I think they should have gotten rid of the Big Blue Barn first...aka Terminal A. I have flown out of Terminal A a number of times and it is a real embarrasment for all North Carolinians....especially since that is the first impression a lot of people get of North Carolina...and their impression is...wow...North Carolina really is bass ackwards.

If you read the Annual Report from Reply 15, that issue was directly mentioned...

Correction: Terminal A is going to be refirbished this year... And the long term plan is still to rebuild Terminal A. Once Terminal C is complete, they plan to build a termorary Terminal A where WN is located.. then tear down the current Terminal A to make a new 4 floor, 40 gate Terminal 1 using the remained of the $1Billion for their Terminal Reconstruction project.

Sounds like a plan to me!

That was the original plan, but Terminal C gets the update since it is no longer a hub terminal, it is easier to do over there, and it will have an impact on less airlines

Maybe you should consider that once Terminal C/2 is finished, you won't be flying in and out of A on most airlines anymore. I believe A is still sceduled to be redone in the future, but it makes more sense to have C able to handle the operations while A is flat out demolished.

RDU should be careful with how much debt it has...Airlines are starting to cut back at airports with high debt since they don't want to pay the fees to land there.

Actually, airlines only pay month-to-month at RDU, which the majority of the airlines favor over long-term leases..

Second, RDUAA has gotten an AAA+ or A+ or A++ (which ever it is) on their loans so I don't think any airline would worry about RDU's debt.

Third, RDU has relatively low fees compared to the vast majority of the airports in the nation.

Lastly, RDU debt is being payed by the increase in passenger fees that they instated over 2 years ago.. which was approved by the FAA.

The cost of the Terminal renovations are a mix of loans, grants, and these fees..

So I doubt that RDU has much to worry about airlines backing out due to some high debt.

Well I hope that RDU is able to keep those fees low after completing their billion dollar building program. Lord knows that if things continue as they are then the airlines will balk at any rate increase at RDU.

The new Terminal A (to be renamed Terminal 1) is supposed to have a 4th floor observation area that spans the terminal..
