Possible Solution To The Fuel Crisis?

Mon Mar 07, 2005 10:03 am

What if the Federal Govermnet created a rewards or voucher system for people willing to use aviation transportation more often. Many cities have uncompetitive routes that charge an arm and a leg to get to a destination. Perhaps to spur travel and the use of airline transportation more, increase incentives to these less popular by plane but more popular by vehicle short hops. It seems that over in Europe many people take the short flight to get from one city to another whereas here time is of the essence and we dont take it into consideration as much. But by having more people using a more efficient way of transportation costs for fuel may be covered for airlines, as more people are flying less popular short flights therefore prices may also go down on the road. Just a thought. Any comments or suggestions?

Open every oil field in the US, and boycot the foriegn oil. Eventually, the prices would come down. Just a thought, as I really don't have a suggestion.

Only CA, TX and AS (possibly OK and LA, but not as sure) can produce enough oil to sustain themselves. The other 45-47 states would be SOL. A conversion of city bus fleets, transport trucks and possibly locomotives to Biodiesel (given all the oil grain the US produces) and a push for Hydrogen internal combustion (not fuel cell) vehicles would help. Then again, you could also halt oil speculation and place artificial caps on oil, but that would piss way too many people off

Sending everyone to the airlines isn't going to solve the fuel crisis. Jets swallow quite a bit of petroleum too.  Wink The only way to solve the fuel problem is to find a new source of power, such as hydrogen. Hell, you might even be able to harness wind energy for aircraft, but probably not...

Better international relationships. A substantial amount of the world's oil-supplies can be found in the Middle East and as long as the conflicts there haven't been solved, oil prices will likely remain high. For starters, a solution to the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians would probably be helpful. I guess peace in the entire region would have a very positive effect on oil-prices.
This, however, is kind of a political thread and I'm not going into who's right and who's wrong here.  Wink

Air travel has increased over the past few years, the trouble is ... the cost of oil like you said. What we need is for GE PW and RR to create engines that run on alternative fuels.

Skewing the economics of the thing with taxation/incentives is a slippery slope, as many socialist countries have discovered. One of the reasons that the USA has such a dynamic and strong economy is that the level of meddling is comparatively low.

33 years ago there was an oil crisis. That should have been the 9/11 of energy usage. It is the fault of every Administration and every Congress since that time not to make every possible effort to find alternative sources of fuel.

Whatever the reasons, governments and industry would rather milk the last possible drop of oil out of the ground and sea before they will seriously look into what comes next.

Oil prices are on an upward trend, and except for short term fluctuations, will continue to do so until the resource is depleted.

Without a viable, renewable energy source...well you all have imaginations.
