Just goes to prove that adherence to checklists is essential.

BTW - all of the action in that video takes place in the first 20-30 seconds. Don't bother with the rest - unless you enjoy listening to amateur play-by-play announcers.

The fact that he didn't keep the tanks balanced just boggles my mind!

A wise pilot once told me the best way to keep from running out of fuel in a small, single engine aircraft: drink two cups of coffee prior to takeoff, thus ensuring your bladder is full before you tanks are empty!  Wink

RaginMav,

That's good - I like it. But since I don't drink coffee or tea, would water work? The only thing is it's not a diuretic, so would Coke work if it's caffeinated?

I actually have it on my checklist to make sure the passengers and myself have recently used the bathroom prior to take-off. However, I'm one of those "don't trust anyone". I always check the fuel quantity if I didn't fill the tanks. Even if that handy FBO employee comes out and helps me fuel, if I'm not fueling, or if I didn't see fuel overflow (or at least the gauge on the pump), I check it. And if I didn't check the fuel quantity before adding fuel, I try to only use the amount that I saw pumped in for my useful fuel (but I use all estimated for weight & balance). I'd rather play it safe and land early in one piece  airplane  than arrive some other way  tombstone .

I'm glad everyone was pretty much okay.

Um, no, I think it was just you. Looks like a genuine plane crash to me.

Even though I hate to say it, I hope that pilot learned a lesson!
During a preflight in a 207, or any GA Single or Twin you are susposed to visually check the fuel in both tanks for fuel quanity and fuel color (correct grade). This guy did niether. And then not to switch tanks. What an idiot!
The way I was always taught:

1. Upon engine failure immediately trim for best glide rate.
2. Find a field to land in.
3 Turn on Fuel Pumps, if equipped.
4. SWITCH TANKS to another tank.
5. Send out Mayday on 121.5
6. Kill Master Switch right before touch down.

The 207 doesn't care which tank you run off of, but this guy made a habit of running off of one tank only, and then to have his commercial ticket! What does he do on long distance trips, land when the right tank empties even though he has a 30 gallon full tank on the left?

Sorry to be such an ass about this, but some people never learn! I always like cruising the NTSB website, you always find stupid things people do.

15K hours and I have never scratched an airplane yet!

Yeah I remember when that happened. It is a real crash, made George Michaels "Sports Machine" that next Sunday.

He got lucky, he managed to put it between the baseball game and that football field with the kids on it.

Story was that he had been trained to only use the other side as an "Aux" tank. I don't know who is the bigger fool, him or the fool that gave him that advice.

He almost made it back to MRI, he maybe had about another minute of flying.

Anyone ever noticed two people near the Cessna left wingtip after it did a 180* didn't move like they didn't see it come in, looked like it wasn't more than 15-20 ft away from it.

I was wondering if the plane stalled just before touching the ground ? It seems that the left wing dropped ?

When I am flying I try to have a large margin of safety (think altitude) to select a adequate spot for crashing. Kids playing baseball or soccer don't fit in my definition of adequate spot.

I know it is easy to criticize sitting in a chair but I think that this 'professional' pilot was not up to the task.

I think the generally concensus is that he was trying to "Stretch" his glide.

I guess I'll take your word for it that it's real. I guess the way the plane seems to "skip" on the tape as it is coming down and crossing the fence gives that impression. Oh well, I've been wrong before.  Embarrassment

David L,

Don't take this too seriously, but what is your definition of "on fire."

I think if you see smoke and/or flames you can pretty much assume that it is on fire.

I don't think the announcer was out of line is saying within two seconds of seeing a fireball from a cartwheeling airplane that it was on fire.

Sacflyer, I was all set for a smart reply till I watched the clip again - on a better monitor. It's a fair cop - I didn't see the burst of flames the first time. See how unreliable eye-witnesses can be? QED!
