US Airways Shuttle 727s Still Operating

Mon Apr 03, 2000 8:29 am

This weekend I flew from DCA-BOS and back on US Airways Shuttle 737-301s (N339US and N349US). While in Boston, I saw a US Airways Shuttle 727-200 in new colors at the gate for the 2:00 pm LGA flight. I had thought all 727s were withdrawn on Dec. 31, but when I got home, I checked the US Airways website, and sure enough, 727s are still scheduled on the Shuttle. I thought the Shuttle 727s were un-hushkitted and couldn't fly in 2000. Does anyone have any information on these aircraft?

I believe the 4 that are left (maybe fewer now) were the ones that were hushkitted, and thus allowed to fly a little longer. (Unlike Delta's that are not kitted, and forced the airline to apply for a 15% extension.)

Each 320 that comes in though replaces a 727 and sends it to retirement.

I don't see any 727's on the current schedule for DCA-LGA-DCA, only A320's. I think there is a 727 parked at DCA and one at LGA for use as reserve aircraft. The one at DCA has its own corner of tarmac and the one at LGA is parked at gate 21.

AFAIK, there are now enough A320's to cover the schedule and reserve flying.
Those 72S must have very little time left

Hey,

I went yesterday to LGA from DCA for Ice Tea   (yes I am an aviation freak) and I saw two new c/s USAirways B727 at LGA waiting for departure to BOS. I saw also at DCA one B727 with new c/s at the hangar area. I think this aircraft is spare. Also at BOS I saw one new c/s B727 on the ramp behind Delta/Continental terminal (I think that that aircraft is also spare). USAirways Shuttle still operate 4 Boeings 727. They will stay in service till next year.
Also, who is making seats for Airbus family? It was my first time in A320 and the seats were so hard, something like in A330 and A340. Does anyone of you noticed that Airbus seats are hard and not that comfortable like in Boeings?

The seats for the aircraft have to do with the airlne not the aircraft company.

Are you sure about those DL jets? I could be wrong, but I know that DL applied for a Stage 3 extension in which they only had to have 85% of their fleet meet Stage 3 to continue operating. I thought the 15% included the shuttle 727s.

I can't speak for mainline 72s, but I know that all Delta shuttle birds are hushed. They have a mix of lightweight and heavyweight hushkits. From a distance, it is difficult to visually see the lightweight kits, but they are all in compliance. Delta will begin 737-800 shuttle service in August.

A little (actually, a lot) off topic, but is DL still planning on allowing check-in 2 minutes before departure for Shuttle flights?

Thanks,
