DL: No More Pillows!

Thu Mar 10, 2005 9:32 am

i dont know if someone already posted this, but i hope im the first one. im watching dateline right now and Brian Williams just said that DL, starting today, is getting rid of pillows on their flights. He also said that AA and NW are thinking of doing the same. i dont know why they are doing that. Maybe to save money??.......

That makes sense to me. Desperate times call for desperate measures. Anyway, PAX in need of a pillow can just bring their own.

Finally a move with some sense. Less mess, less dirty and nasty pillows and I am sure the F/A's are happy, no-one can ask them now "Can I please have a pillow?" Next move is getting rid of the trashy blankets. Less clutter always helps.

I know AA has already had that rule for a while, not sure about NW, though.

its on ALL of DL flights. so, yes, im afraid int'l flights will be pillowless too. but thats a good question. i would think on long haul flights in first class, they should have something. maybe washable pillow cases. after all, if pax pay more for a fist class ticket, airlines will treat them better than the cattle in coach.lol.

Actually, it's not on all flights. Read the following excerpt from Delta's news release.

"Beginning in mid-March, Delta no longer will provide pillows on flights within the 48 contiguous states, Bermuda, Canada, and Central American and Caribbean destinations. The change is part an effort to provide more room for carry-on luggage in overhead bins while reducing costs. Blankets will continue to be available."

The only use I have for those things are to prop me up when on an international flight to see the movie if I'm in coach. Otherwise, I'd just sit up and grow up Big grin

NW still has them in int'l flights. To answer the question about pillow cases, yes hey do have covers on them that are disposable and are changed nightly at NW. If you are on the first flight in the am your cover will be new, but that pillow inside could have been around awhile. Seeing as they are now only on int'l flights the pillow covers will be new on each flight. Like at Delta the blankets will stay for now.

I heard Independence Air will start selling neck pillows and fleece blankets for passengers to keep at 1/2 the price of what they would charge in an airport shop. I think about 10 dollars

Someone at DL must have read Michael Boyd's weekly column on his
aviationplanning.com site a couple of weeks ago when he discussed
about AA's decision to take pillows out and how they should have
taken them out long ago, them being such carriers of filth and disease.

Of course they have pillowcases, and they are supposed to be changed every single flight.

I would assume that the pillows will pretty much just stay on the 777 and 767-300 ER fleets.

Anyway, no complaints here...I've only used them twice in the past ten years, so I'm not complaining...plus, it helps frees up some overhead space.

Actually that part is true. there is nothing more frustrating in flying than boarding a full flight, finally finding a place to store your bag, only to find it is stuffed with 20 pillows that have been shoved in there by all the passengeres that boarded before you. These pillows, could be as many as 150 of them, sure take their share of space in the overheads.

Jhooper-

I gotta agree with LegendDC9 here. One of my little peeves is that the pillows always end up in the bins over the exit row, which I try to reserve given the additional legroom provided. I always end up having to move the $%^#@! pillows out of the way before I can put my bag up in the overhead, and someone inevitably just tosses them down on the nearest empty seat once those bins start to fill up. I suppose the excuse sounds flimsy, but I'm happy to see those nasty things gone. I mean, would you put your head on a pillow when you don't know who used it last (and how they used it)? Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

What a dumb, silly comment.. saying 'if you want one bring it of your own' is not a customer-satisfaction approach

Soon they will get rid of toilets or make them a pay-option - or do I need to bring my ownb bottle to p- and s--t in?.. maybe also of the overhead bins or window shutters..

No surprise for me that US civil aviation is in such a desparate condition, realizing the uncontrolled overcompetition..

As you can see, a majority dislike the pillows, and everyone knows it will save the carrier money. Though i often place a pillow between by back and seat for some support, it's not that impt, i could improvise. and sure is hell not the cleanest thing on the plane. Besides, fares are some of the lowest in a long time. Free Market Economy. Don't like it, Don't fly 'em! Or just fly first!

Pillow cases, at best, are changed when a plane remains over nite ( RON ). Why anyone would want to use it to rest their head on is beyond me...and the blankets that have been refolded and placed in the overhead bin are just as infested with God knows what as the pillows would be.. fresh blankets in plastic wrappers should be sought on an airplane  Smile
