Did I See A Starship Over Chicago Skies Today?

Fri Mar 11, 2005 3:46 am

Hello,

While driving into work this morning (around 8:30) I heard a really weird airplane noise and looked up (like any good airplane geek). It was an aircraft whose nose looked like that of a hammer-head shark. It had two engines in the rear. The sound was quite unlike anything else I have heard. Sorry I dont have much more details since I could not get out of my car in the middle of the road. I was on Willow Rd (in Northbrook) waiting to get onto I94. I am assuming it was headed toward Palwaukee but could also have been headed to O'Hare.

Any ideas on whether this was a Starship? If so, how often (or how rare) is it that a Starship flies around Chicago skies?

Any info would be greatly appreciated. Who knows, maybe one of you could hop on over to Palwaukee to see if it is still there.

Thanks.

It was Darth Vader coming to town  duck

But, from the description, it could very well be a Be-2000 Starship

You're right, the Starship is pretty well recognizable by the sound. Too bad you don't have Passur to look it up and confirm.

Having heard one, I'd bet it was a Piaggio Avanti:

Wasn't the Starship all retired?

It's most likely a Piaggo Avanti. The Starship looks similar, especially high in the sky.

There are somewhere between 1 and 3 Starships left flying because the owners didn't want to give them back to Beechcraft for scrapping. Of course, the problem with that is that there are not going to be any parts for them if there are no new parts being made and all the spares got turned into bike parts and pop cans. Word has it, though, that Bart Rutan, the original designer, has pledged to do everything he can to keep the ones left still in the air, including devoting time at Scaled Composites to custom make parts if need be.

It was probably an Avanti in Chicago, though.

Thanks for the responses. Based on the pictures above, I am more convinced that it was an Avanti. The a/c I saw did have a tail while the Starship does not have a tail. How many Avanti's are there in the US?

22R - Here it is:

Aircraft ID: N307SL
Aircraft Type: PIAGGIO P180
Owner/Operator:
AVANTAIR INC
380 HANSCOM DR HANSCOM FIELD
BEDFORD MASSACHUSETTS

03-10 08:35am N307SL P180 Arrived ORD from HPN
03-10 09:19am N307SL P180 Departed PWK to IER

Sorry, no pics in the database. But good ear! I've never seen one at ORD. Or anywhere else for that matter. This along with yesterday's KLM MD-11 at ORD, is it time to start an ORD RareBirds thread?  wink

Airfinair,

Thanks so much for pulling this info. One thing that is kinda weird: it looks like it arrived ORD at 8:35 AM (about 5 mins after I saw it on what must have been on approach to ORD). But within 45 mins it departed out of Palwaukee??

How come? U think it made a quick dash from ORD to PWK within those 45 mins?  scratchchin

22right - Sorry, mistyped. It went from ORD-IER. And I can only assume it used 22R to land, too.

Well, there's not very much aluminum in a Starship...

Actually I think Beech did warehouse some of the items.

The fact that they didn't offer the airframes to museums and tech schools was a crime.

All they would have had to do was remove the dataplate to ground them.
