Frontier Airlines To Akron

Mon Mar 14, 2005 12:40 am

Not announced yet, but it will be. Good friend of mine in DEN gave me this info. Likely flown with the Horizon CRJ-700's. According to my friend in DEN, this was "the worst kept secret in the company". Too bad they didn't choose CMH, I would have used them all the time.

Reasons why your friend is mistaken:

CAK/DEN has a daily O&D of only 39 passengers. There are several cities closer to DEN with much higher O&D traffic, including CMH with 239 daily passengers.

F9 has yet to dispatch its RJ fleet on flights longer than 1000 miles. CAK is 1200+. CMH is 1100+.

F9 management are creatures of habit. They choose new cities by high O&D traffic and especially those cities where DEN originating traffic wants to fly.

CAK doesn't fit the model.

I would be willing to bet they put this rumor out themselves to protect whatever really will be getting announced. Unless they have a contract with someone though, I seriously doubt Akron is a new city.

Being here in Ohio I would also say I really doubt it as well.

Or this could be a rumor to piss of CLE, since Cleveland chased away the likes of Frontier and JetBlue

http://www.airliners.net/discussions...eral_aviation/read.main/1978288/4/

Maybe they mean to spread this 'rumor', because i am guessing Cleveland would hate to lose an airline to Akron, like they did AirTran.

Quoting Alphascan (Reply 1):

I bet if these flights were to happen for real, they would try to capture some of the DEN-CLE passengers as well... which would add to that 39, plus since no one offers CAK-west coast, there will be more than 39 passengers daily on that route, connecting in Denver flying onwards.

Alphascan, just wait and see. CAK will be announced, even if it "doesn't fit the model". You can't just look at local O&D figures.

That will be very exciting. I can fly home from SFO with 1-stop on another carrier. I sure hope the rumor was true. I had mention CAK before and was blown of by other. Maybe its true!

Akron would be a very interesting choice. I think it would do well. The CR7 is the perfect aircraft for this route. It's not like the Horizon CR7's are uncomfortable for pete's sake.

I hope the rumors true to I fly to CAK a lot and would love to see a F9 jet there, and that means cheaper ways of getting west then US Airways or Northwest!!

First Dayton, now Akron - both as "confirmed rumor" cities for Frontier on this board? Wow!

There is a wee problem with it being CR7 service though. Where will they get the aircraft?

Some of us are scratching our heads as to how they are going to add the announced 5 more daily frequencies with the present CR7 fleet.

DEN/RSW does very well for Frontier - in the winter months. It is 2 x daily. But it drops down to 2 x weekly in the summer.

Right after the announcements about McMurdo (Antarctica), and Wellington, NZ.
I don't see it happening. Horizon doesn't hace CRJ's too spare and we're not taking enough new Airbii this year to mainline it. Stay tuned...

BTW- There was just a hot corporate memo sent to F9 employees about "leaks", especially new routes, etc. So warn your "friend" Panaman, they'll get smoked for releasing info.

Gee, I thought that was already true when I saw it in the forum list.
My personal suggestion when starting a rumor thread like this..
Try a title like "Frontier could/may announce CAK service". Or at least add a question mark at the end.

I wouldn't totally rule out CAK as a possibility, but why would F9 do it with the availablity of what appear to be better new markets for them? Some kind of incentive involved?

Now if the rumor is true, I guess F9 has spotted something with the AirTran activity going on there now, but there is doubt with those O&D numbers said above though they do not have a source. Generally most LCC's prefer high O&D to produce the greatest yields. However, you can not rely on regular O&D numbers alone, especially when you are dealing with an LCC.

Actually I think the Horizon CR7's are comfortable. I'm a pretty big guy and I didn't find them bad at all. Just as good in terms of comfort factor as the Delta 757's I just flew on. There is no reason why those planes can't be used on longer flights. Just give people a nonstop flight. That's all that really matters when it comes down to it. I hardly ever have people ask me what kind of plane they will be flying on...maybe one a month, if that.

Personally i'd rather see SAT than CAK. CAK may work though, who knows.

Well you were right Panaman. Frontier will announce new service to CAK and SAT later today. Indications are that the CAK service will consist of two daily RTs on A319s.

As far as looking at O&D, F9 is almost fanatical about DEN O&D traffic. The vast majority of their retail initiatives in the last year (5 out of 7) were for flights to and from DEN with no connects over DEN being put on sale.

MSYtristar said last month that there would be a "stunner" in the new city announcements....CAK certainly fits that category.

I realize the CAK area is one of the fastest growing areas in the nation east of the Rockies. I also realize that the DOT stats for O&D on feeder carriers are terribly inaccurate and that there is likely to be "spill traffic" from fortress CLE.

However, I'm uncomfortable with this decision. Even if the DOT O&D numbers are off by 200%, there are other cities with more traffic and higher average fares which are closer to DEN for better aircraft utilization.

I hope I'm wrong...again.

I am flying into CAK later on this afternoon....I would love to see Frontier in CAK and can definitely see this happening.

CAK has grown tremendously over the past few years. Even though I am staying only 3 mi. from CLE, I choose to fly into CAK for the extremely low fares. Between CO running up the fares and the (mis-)management by Hopkins with landing fees, etc. - chasing away jetBlue, LH Cargo, Frontier, etc. - I could see CAK getting west coast service. While the O&D might only be 39 between CAK and DEN - I am sure if you toss in LAS, LAX, SFO, etc. - as well as people like me who prefer CAK over CLE - that number would grow exponentially....

I don't much care for rumors and will believe it when I see it, but it seems pretty likely to me. I wonder why people are knocking the CR7s so much, too. The CRJ-200s are brutal, but I am very comfortable on CR7s and EMB-145s....two of my legs today - PBI-TLH and ATL-CAK are on 700s.....

Before you complain about QX CR7 service, why don't you try complaining about CRJ-500s, they're much more cramped, IMO. I personally find CRJ-700s VERY comfortable, definately the most comfortable of all RJs I've ever flown.

Well it sounds like this might be true! Here's an article in today's Akron Beacon Journal:

http://www.ohio.com/mld/ohio/11147836.htm

"On June 15, Frontier Airlines will begin two daily flights between Akron-Canton Airport and Frontier's hub at Denver International Airport, said Zoe Guynn, Frontier's manager of corporate communications."

Looks like it won't be the CRJ after all either:

"Continental and United both have two daily nonstop flights to Denver from Hopkins. Continental uses full-size jets that seat more than 100 people, and United uses regional jets that seat about 70. Frontier will have new full-size jets that seat about 130 people, Guynn said."

Glad to see it's going to be mainline. I think CAK customers have gotten used to FL's full size 717's. 3+ hours to DEN would've been too long on any CRJ.

I flew PHX-SEA on a CRJ-900 and it was not that bad...about a 2.5 hour flight.

7e7 - I just feel claustrophobic on long regional flights. CRJ cabin is tight, especially along the window seats, I feel like I have to lean in. In the winter it's worse, full plane, heavy coats, etc.... I'll take a NW DC9 over a CRJ anyday. I like the Airbus, it should work well from CAK. I would think a 318 would be almost perfect for starting DEN-CAK.

Very nice, I think it'll do well at CAK. Gate space it tight there because of construction. Wonder what they'll use. Only 2 jetbridges there now. Gate 5, which was US, and 7, which FL uses heavily.

Exactly! I flew a Horizon CRJ-700 Tucson-San Jose and was impressed enough to put my family on one roundtrip Seattle-Long Beach, when Horizon was doing the run. No complaints at all.

Now from what I hear, the CRJ-200 that United Express (and many others) fly are very uncomfortable. I can only guess that United4everDenver has previously mentioned his dislike of the -200, and was only extending it to the larger craft as well. (In other words, I'm sure he wasn't trying to bash the Frontier/Horizon product in his namesake city  Smile).

Frontier adding pair of twice-daily routes

Frontier Airlines will begin twice-daily flights from Denver to Akron-Canton Airport in Ohio on June 15, the only nonstop service on that route.

The airline will also begin twice-daily flights from Denver to San Antonio International Airport on June 26, competing against United Airlines.
