CA 744, Goes Off Taxiway At LAX Enroute To PEK

Mon Mar 14, 2005 2:21 am

Air China 744 hit a soft spot off the taxiway at LAX enroute to PEK and got stuck at 0155 Sunday. The 330 people aboard were taken off the plane, the fuel removed to make it lighter however it seems the 744 is still stuck.

I haven't found any pictures of this yet.

I'm in LA now. Saw the plane right off aviation avenue, fire trucks and stuff all around. And no camera. According to local news it made a wrong turn and it's right gear got stuck in 3 ft of soft asphalt. It has now been moved, but is behind a building so no photo op. But have to say, it's livery was pretty dirty looking.

The weather was perfect today, so the pilot will really have to dig for excuses.  duck

According to later afternoon news reports, the airport emergency services placed wire mats under and behind the affected landing gear on the soft taxiway area and used tugs to pull the a/c out of the problem area.
It will be interesting to find out what happened. As was the beginning of the flight, the pilot wouldn't be tired, like at the end of the flight. Perhaps the pilot was given some bad taxing directions or they misunderstood the taxing directions.

Interesting as I saw this plane land from Beijing yesterday afternoon!! Who would have guessed that it would have ended up in this mess!

its not like they have a spare 747 lying around, so what does the airline do? Stick them up in a hotel and rent one?  Smile

I can only imagine the flight crew had no idea what happened when their aircraft hit the " soft spot". I am assuming they tried to get loose from the area by increasing the engines? I wonder how much time went by before they said " LAX, we have a problem"?  Smile

Here are some pics.

Is it just me or does it look like someone had painted "Caution" (with part of the o and the n covered by a patch) on the asphalt right behind the rear tire... if only it had been a tiny bit larger...

From that angle, it doesn't look like that much of a problem.

Just saw it on the local LA FOX 10:00 news (KTTV-TV) -- all pax were bussed to a hotel at about 5:00, the tires were replaced, and it departed this evening. Also noted that the geer had gone "1 to 3 feet into the ground"

Aparently several pax were concerned about using the same aircraft and they went out with 27 pax fewer than were boarded the first time around. (The pax that FOX was interviewing were told that it was a "mechanical problem" and didn't find out until the reporter told them what the real issue was)
