Sterling And Iceland Express To Merge

Mon Mar 14, 2005 7:13 pm

Today Sterling announced they have been sold to Fons Eignarhaldsfelag, the company owns Iceland Express too. The directors will take over Sterling from April and later merge Iceland Express and Sterling. The amount of Steling was DKK 400 mln (53,7 mln EUR).

Interesting. It seems to the Nordic LCC are keeping on consolidating and merging. Last time it was Sterling sharing timetables and fares with Norwegian, and now Iceland Express with Sterling. Next step? Maersk Air?

Great news! This will result in an excellent LCC connection between KEF and many European airports via CPHBig grin

Definitely good news. I've always wanted to visit Iceland but the ridiculous high airfares have put me off. Despite Iceland Express being a 'LCC', they are still expensive on flights to STN (though their fares are still better than FI).

I was under the impression DM was a full service airline?

Interesting to see the Icleanders are busy acquiring on the airline front at the moment - part of easyJet, one or two of the UK specialist charter airlines (I forget which ones). Who next?

Horus,

DM about 1 year ago changed it's concept and called it "fly as you like" and became a semi-LCC. Coffee and water are complementary, and they charge for beverages and meals, and you choose your seating class: Small, Medium or Large. Large seats includes full service, and the price of L seat is fixed 600 to 1400 DKK and it's added to the regular fare (S seat). Medium just offer more legroom for DKK 200 extra.

If our Icelandic friends continue like that they will soon have more registered Boeing aircraft than registered inhabitants  Smile.

The charter airline taken over is Excel. It is part of the Avion Group now, which comprises Air Atlanta, Air Atlanta Europe and Islandsflug.
