TAP Officially Joins Star Alliance

Mon Mar 14, 2005 10:17 pm

TAP Portugal has officially joined Star Alliance. Today, on TAP's 60th anniversary Star Alliance and TAP held a joint press conference in Lisbon.
“We are pleased to welcome TAP as our newest member carrier”, said Jaan Albrecht, CEO Star Alliance. “With TAP, Star Alliance has again improved its network quality, thereby adding to our customer proposition and further strengthening our leading position among the aviation alliances”, he continued.

Joining Star Alliance will at the same time also improve TAP’s competitive position. TAP can now offer its customers access to the entire Star Alliance network. Moreover, TAP’s Victoria Frequent Flyer Programme now offers the Star Alliance frequent traveller benefits, such as being able to collect and redeem miles on all Star Alliance member carrier flights. Furthermore, TAP’s Victoria Gold Winners members are now also Star Alliance Gold members, being granted such privileges as access to 620 Star Alliance Gold Lounges, being allowed an extra baggage allowance and being given waitlist and airport stand by priorities. TAP’s Victoria Silver Winners members are now also Star Alliance Silver members, allowing them waitlist and airport stand by priorities across all member carriers.

Fernando Pinto, CEO TAP Portugal said: “We at TAP are extremely happy that we have joined Star Alliance today, which coincides with our 60th anniversary. Our employees have worked hard over the past years to achieve the company’s turnaround, which has now culminated in the recent launch of our new corporate image and today’s joining of Star Alliance. We all at TAP look forward to welcoming and serving all Star Alliance customers”.

As a Star Alliance member, TAP Portugal will begin to participate and sell the 2 3ten Star Alliance fare products during the course of the next month. For example, customers purchasing the very popular Round-the-World fares can then include TAP flights in their itinerary. The same is true for the European Airpass, which now includes all of TAP’s European routes. Moreover, convention organisers using Star Alliance’s tailor-made Conventions Plus product, can now also make use of TAP’s services.

All in all, the Star Alliance member carriers now offer more than 15,000 daily flights covering some 795 destinations in 139 countries.

Congrats TAP, hope to see you at YYZ soon!

I was about to start this tread.  Smile

I wasn't aware of the change of the name of the frequent flyer program. Only this morning when I checked my milleage realized the change from the Navigator Program to Victoria.

Congratulations for TP on joining the Star Alliance and it's 60th Birthday. This is trully an historical day for TAP, and the portuguese and world aviation.

There were talks about an order being announced today during the signature of the contract, apparently either the media didn't get it, or no announcement was made. If any news arise, I'll post them here.

Regards
Luis

Any guesses?

My guess is going to A330's, but I wouldn't mind to see a B777...

That's me guessing.....  Smile

Me taking an educated guess... TP as a launch costumer for the A350 with 7 orders and 3 options... but that's just me Big grin

Good news to hear that TAP has joined the STAR Alliance. They have a good network of flights to Brazil and parts of North Africa which will be convenient for many Star Alliance customers flying to those regions.

On TAP's site, specifically on the frequent flyer page mentions that SAA will officially join in 2006.

The news reports in France re the LX/LH merger seemed to think that IB would make a move on TP when it is privatised, and that TP would fall under the BA/IB umbrella. How likely is this given TP's commitment to Star - could this happen ?

If IB offered the right price then it could well happen. The fact that they are currently in an alliance would make little difference. Other carriers have changed allegiance before.

And it would be TP's third alliance if so - is that a record ??

No, it would equal LOT's (unofficial) record. LO were part of Qualiflyer, then were affiliated to Oneworld (don't remember if they ever joined) then went to Star. Pick an alliance, any alliance !

I forgot LOT - but they didn't actually join Oneworld so TP is still ahead in my book !!

Why is TAP ahead? Austrian was on Qualiflyer and now is on Staralliance, as well as other companies that belonged to the ex qualiflyer group (and are still alive) and now belong to one of the current alliances.

I agree with you concerning the 330's. However when you say "TAP wont go boeing again anytime soon" that sounds like they had a negative experience. Please elaborate.

No, we were talking regarding the question if IB was to buy TP - then that would make three alliances for them if they were to move to oneworld. Perhaps my wording was a bit clumsy  Smile

All hypothetical of course, but if anything it highlighted how fluid the alliance world can be, as such a scenario could happen at other current alliance carriers around the world.
