Attn SFO Spotter 1R Arrivals In Progress!

Tue Mar 15, 2005 12:43 am

Hey guys...planes are landing 1R over the mountains. Looks like they will be most of the day with wind 010/14 currently and expecting to gust. Get some shots. You to Jason!

Anybody happen to know why UA1252 returned to SFO min after departure?

Regarding UA1252 someone told me that they heard over the radio that they had a generator problem.

Sure is nice to see everyone landing on the 1s. Winds currently are 020 at 23

I used to live in San Bruno, excellent place to watch the planes around that area. All those planes coming of the mtn to land. Very nice!

Unfortunately, it looks like the winds have died down and they are back to normal operations.

Apparently SQ16 lost quite a bit of rubber on her arrival this morning - eyewitness report said she came in hot with about 35 degrees of bank after overshooting the rwy 1R centerline on the dogleg over Millbrae  Smile

Unfortunately I'm on the other side of the field most of the day and could only see the procession of aircraft flying the 28L/R circle to land procedure till they turned the field back around right around the forecast time.

I arrived @ BayShore Park exactly at 2:30 p.m. (PST), unfortunately, by then there was not even one flight arriving on the "1's".....they all arrived on the "28's".....I left the park @ 6:00 p.m.........no luck.  Sad

On top of that, I got the good ole' Millbrae dog sniffing squad....lol....it was funny..

That being said, KLM's 777 took off from 1R....what a BEAUTY!!!

Is there a similar WX forecast to LA's (predictable Santa Anas) for the bay area??? If there is I'd risk a trip up for the day for to catch some 1R action if the odds are pretty high! Or do such winds just randomly appear?

Generally if winds are strong out of the east or south (as often happens during inclement weather) they will shift the field around such that instrument arrivals use 19L (visuals on 19R conditions allowing) and all departures off of 10L/R. Very rarely winds will be strong enough out of the east that they will land the 10s also. This happens maybe once or twice a year at the most - about the same level of rarity one can expect with seeing the 01s being utilized for arrivals.

From what I've seen the last few times I've been lucky enough to catch the latter situation, there has to be unusually strong offshore flow - sustained winds out of the north/northeast at greater than 18 knots with gusts often to 25 or more. See any of that in a TAF for SFO and I'd definitely recommend trying to pop in to see the bay area's impression of Kai Tak!

Aaron747...u're right, its VERY rare and its not something I would plan a trip on.............it takes a right combination of events, and lots of luck, or being at the airport. As of 1:45 p.m., flights were still arriving on the 1's, but as stated above, I was watching at BayFront park at exactly 2:30 and every flight was landing on the 28's. I did land a few months ago on the 19's, it was brutal weather (lots of wind, rain, fog), but the AA763 had a smooth landing!!

Thanks Aaron, I guess I'll take my chances on the next 'projected' super crappy storm in the area and give it a shot...

The same type of storm usually forces LAX to turn around as well... but we get it way more than SFO does (plus the Santa Anas)
