Virgin Atlantic Upper Class: Is It Comfortable?

Tue Mar 15, 2005 5:32 am

I was looking at these pictures the other day, and wondered whether or not the seating was comfortable. I realize that the seats are much larger than in economy and you have a lot more personal space, however I was wondering about the ascent/ descent portions of the flight as you're sitting almost sideways. For those who have flown, do you find that you're being pushed up against that side wall while the aircraft ascends or descends? How would you compare it to a standard front facing first class seat?

Also, do you have to physically get up out of the chair in order to change it from a chair into a bed? This is what I understood from a picture that I saw, but wasn't sure.

Thanks in advance.

I have flown in the new seats several times. And I can say that it is very very comfortable. About the best of any carriers currently

You have to get up out of the seat in order to convert it to a bed. the seat back folds over and with the ottoman, becomes a fully flat bed. You can do this your self or the FAs will be very glad to do it for you.

You can recline the seat when seated for landing and take off. You do not have to be fully upright. The only carrier that allows this.

You are indeed at an angle facing inwards, but you can turn your body to look out of the window if you so desire, without much difficulty. No you are not pushed against the side wall at all.

I have flown in the Virgin UCS twice, and it is the only airline where the 'flat bed' really feels like a bed! It really is flat, the mattress is firm (I love a firm mattress, some don't though) and it is about 85cm wide at the shoulders, so you can really sleep like in a real bed. As 'Aerofan' wrote the seats are also really comfortable as seats, and I really enjoyed being able to recline with my feet resting on the ottoman during takeoff!

There is a slight sidewards/backwards pressure on takeoff, but of no real consequence.

those seats are truly great - I echo the views above - the beds are very wide at the head end - and its possible to curl up for a good nights sleep!

each seat also has aisle access, and you can get up/leave your seat without having to recline/empty your table - truly excellent design.

Am due to fly the Suites again in May and am looking forward to it!

Have only been on the LHR B744 with the suites, this has the inflight beauty treatment area in the "A" zone (on the right hand side of the second picture originally posted), and comes equipped with a proper massage headrest for a firm back massage.

All massages I have had on VS have been very very welcome, and sure help you relax (or help send you off to sleep on a night flight).

As for the bar, on the LHR B744 there are 5 bar stools, and a never ending drink service - they are always asking if you want another drink before you finish your previous one - could not be better in my experience!

Theres also various fruit/sweets on the bar to eat, and you can also order any of the food from the Upper Class menu (called the freedom menu) to eat at the bar, when you want it.

It is truly a great way to fly

The seats look very comfortable but doesn't seem like it would be too easy to look out of the window if you had a so called window seat.

The pictures make it look more difficult that it actually is.

Yes its more of an angle than a regular J class seat, but not really a problem to window gaze if thats your thing.

I've flown the Upper Class Suites 3 times (between LAX & LHR). They are comfortable, but I do not think they are more comfortable than some of the true First Class Suite products on other airlines (remember, Upper Class is not a true First Class product, more of a combined Business/First product). I found the United First Suites more comfortable personally, as they are wider, and it is easier to turn them into beds.

That said, the Upper Class Suite is still an amazing product and if you or your company have the $$$ to spend, it is worth it. (also a major plus is the car service at either end of your journey, and the Virgin Upper Class lounge at LHR is awesome.)

What is the difference between the A343 old UC and the newer version on the B744 and A346. I ask because I am flying to Mumbai next month and wish to choose tihe "better" business class product of the new competing airlines. Is there a big difference between old and new?

Regards,

They're wildly different in every way.  Silly

Think of the old UC as a regular business class seat, and the UC suite as more of a first class bed style product.

Can't wait until NZ roll out this product in their new long range fleet. It will help them win back a huge amount of premium passengers.

UC is a J/C product. No need to compare it with a F/P service.
