Adventure Report: 8 Flights On Northwest

Tue Apr 04, 2000 5:59 am

I just got back from a trip on Northwest, 8 flights total. It was very fun! Overall, Northwest and Mesaba are airlines with nice people, and adventurous flights!

Northwest B757-251 N513US DEN-MSP
Climbed out with lots of power, very lightly loaded aircraft. Got a hard bagle and orange juice for meal. There were only about 70 pax onboard so I moved to a window seat in an exit row. We ended up crusing at FL410.

Northwest DC-10-40 N154US MSP-DTW
Aircraft was delayed 30mins getting in. After getting on board, we were informed of a great deal of problems, including inoperable: fuel guages, APU (it was over 80F inside), air start cart, oil system in #2 and then a navigation system error, spoiled food and the list goes on and on. Finally got in the air in the mostly full aircraft. Recieved a ham sandwich, apple, and drink.

Northwest Airlink (Mesaba) S340B N404XJ DTW-CRW-ROA
Aircraft was very dirty on the inside. Had a seat behind the wing. Vibrations and noise were uncomfortable, yet bareable. Got a soda and granola bar. Very good looking flight attendant.

Northwest Airlink (Mesaba) S340B N418XJ ROA-CRW-DTW
Aircraft was again, dirty. Seats were stained and various parts of the interior were loose or missing. Was in the very first row, right in line with the prop. Vibrations and noise were very uncomfortable, first time I ever wanted to get out of an aircraft. Got a soda and granola bar. Lavoratory is very small! And, of course, another very good looking flight attendant.

Northwest B757-251 N528US DTW-MSP
We were delayed for about 20mins because a class flying from germany had all their music instruments to be loaded, which took a great deal of time. Sat with about 20 girls also in high school. Nevertheless, we had a great time! Flight was packed.

Northwest B727-2M7 N727RW MSP-DEN
Because of the delay on the previous flight, I had a layover of about 15mins in MSP, yet there were over a dozen aircraft in front of us for takeoff along with aircraft landing, so we were delayed about 30mins. Not an empty seat on the aircraft. Got another ham sandwich, apple, and soda. In Denver we landed in a snowstorn with almost no visibility, I loved it!

Did you do all this just for fun or just to earn up some WorldPerks miles or what?

UAL fan, why is that "hell in air???" Most flights sounded fun. I wonder if you'd get any better service on UAL ( an OK airline, too). All flights had reasonable service (sandwiches, drinks, granola bars), some delays may happen to every airline, and props are fun but a bit noisy (don't talk about UAL-Express' Brasilia's and J-31s!).
nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?

I had to get to Roanoke, so I decided to have some fun doing it. Service was just fine overall. I thought the DC-10 delay was quite comical actually. "Well folks, we have the problem fixed, but we won't be leaving just yet, as we have discovered another one."

If Northwest is your only choice, don't hesitate at all flying with them. Besides one FA, all the other people I dealed with, from ramp workers to captains were very nice and tried their best to help. Cabins of aircraft were generally clean and leg room was fine, although there is less to be said of Mesaba.

Sounds great! I can't wait until they replace those DC10-40s, they are really starting to show their age.

BTW, why did you choose to connect through MSP? Couldn't you have taken DEN-DTW-ROA?

I could've flown DEN-DTW-ROA, but theres no fun in that compared to DEN-MSP-DTW-CRW-ROA

You must have a cast-iron stomach, Flyf15! Those possibly-spoiled ham sandwiches, along with all that "roughage" from the granola bars would've had me in the head with the "grins." LOL!

OK....Hell in the air=Dirty broken down delayed airplanes serving rotten food.

"fuel guages, APU (it was over 80F inside), air start cart, oil system in #2 and then a navigation system error, spoiled food and the list goes on and on." - thats pretty wild and scary.

UAL planes are usually quite clean......most being pretty new. The food is usually pretty good.

I fly over 100K / year on UAL......can honestly say even with several connections I have not had that many wierd things happen on one trip.
