DL 757s In New Colors?

Tue Mar 15, 2005 12:49 pm

I've noticed that DL has been painting new aircraft with the new widget recently, and have noticed the only aircraft not being painted are 757s. Why it this? I know 12 are going to Song but still. Here's the aircraft with the new widget I can recall:

732:
N314DL

763:
N133DN
N134DN
N140LL
N1501P
N155DL
N172DN
N173DN
N174DN
N172DZ
N173DZ
N174DZ
N176DZ
N177DZ

777:
N860DA
N861DA
N862DA

MD-88:
N905DE
N906DE
N907DE
N912DE
N914DL

These are probably really wrong. Can anyone contribute some more?

I can't tell you ship ids (not that kind of enthusiast) but I have personally boarded 10 or 15 757 flights with the Deltaflot livery.

Certainly I've boarded twice that many on a 738 with it. Don't forget there are also M90s that have been repainted.

According to the Delta paint dept intranet site, currently we have 64 757s in the new livery, 21 in the mid or Leo paint scheme, and 36 in Song colors. Info last updated 02-23-05. Kind of surprising that you haven't noticed any 757s in the new colors.

I think SESGDL is just talking about the actual widget next to the Delta titles, not the whole scheme.

Hes not talking about the entire scheme, just the linear vs. curved widget.

I don't think they are going back and changing them. They only do it when the plane is getting painted. I know they are not changing the widget during HMV. So the ones you see have all been totally repainted since last summer.

Quoting SESGDL (Thread starter):
new aircraft with the new widget recently

He's talking about the 'hard line widget' this is the tweak to the Deltaflot livery that started around the Grinstein era...

I meant the new triangular widget as opposed to the more rounded ones. What I was saying in my post was that DL hasn't painted any 757s from Ron Allen colors to Leo colors in quite some time. Do they intend to anytime soon?

SESGDL

Sorry I didn't understand what you were looking for in my previous post. So to answer your question, the last DL 757 to be painted was N900PC, which was painted at TOCIII on April 05, 2004. It was the last 757 to wear the old widget scheme prior to that. The photo below shows that it still has the curved widget.

Based on the list at the commencement of this topic, all the listed aircraft are in the new colours - please correct me!!

I see N172DN and N914DL listed as with new widgets, thus I gather they are in new colours (no photograph in new colours yet on database).

If any one can add any recently repainted aircraft since the last long thread, that would be great.

thanks.

I can't figure out which is more ridiculous in this case:

1) People spending their time talking about a MINOR logo change

OR

2) Delta actually spending the time and money to make this change. Even if this change is only made during Mx or repainting, I still think it's crazy they are putting time and money into it, especially for an airline in the financial shape it is in.

Delta is by far my favorite and most frequently used airline. I am a big fan of the old paint job and not so much the 2nd and wavy design. I've taken more photos of their planes for my personal website than any other airline out there. I just wish they'd settle on one design and keep it for a while. They remind me of the Chicago White Sox or Cleveland Cavaliers, changing their jersies every few years.

Wow reading this thread has made me Dizzy...

The "new" widget IS the old (straight-edge) widget that Delta had since the 1960s. The curvy widget has only been around for like 3 or 4 years and is now being retired in favor of the older widget thats been around for 30 or 40 years.

It is important because lots of Delta fans were ripping out their hair in protest to the change of the straight-edge widget to the curvy widget. As in: "How DARE the new management vandalize the traditional widget???" and this sort of feeling...

I think they realize it was a pretty stupid idea.

Also, and probably more importantly, Gerry didn't like the new widget.

Uh, actually, more precisely, he didn't like the three-year-old new widget, as opposed to the the new new (old) widget. Uh, that is, he didn't like the curvy widget.

Down with the wimpy widget! Long live the classic widget! I have read the return of the "classic" was an employee request. Thank you Delta employees! I imagine it will take a long, long time to rid the everything of the curved one. Though, a lot of the classics never disappear off of ground gear, jetways and the like as they lasted into the interim colors.

As for the livery, give me the classic as well! That swept back widget on the tail and the simple DELTA was great. The wavy gravy has grown on me. It looks classy on the tail even though it is not a "logo" and to me gives Delta a harder time with brand identification. All the better we have the widget at least somewhere.

My idea would be to merge classic livery with Deltaflot and add classic font. Put a big swept back widget by the door. Then begin the wavy gravy from the widget flowing back narrowly along the cheatline until it gets to the tail where it unfurls full out. Add name in caps again. "Delta" looks weak and the font is weak! Bring back "DELTA" in the winged art deco font Delta had circa DC-7s. A crown and the title "777 Gold Crown Service" wouldn't look bad somewhere on the triple 7 either.
