Could JFK-BFL Work For B6?

Wed Mar 16, 2005 8:06 am

Could JFK-BFL work for JetBlue?

Since B6 seems to have a strategy of surrounding LAX [and SFO], is there a potential market for non stop service to BFL from the NYC area? JFK-FAT seems like a stretch, but BFL seems like it has more of a catchment area and is closer to LA.

Other then a 10,000 foot runway, what do the other logistics look like?

I would think that BFL is in line right after PSP.

In case nobody gets it, I don't think that either is a likely destination anytime soon, although both would be nice for me.

How come though is what I want to know? I'm a NY'er so it's all California to me.

Doesnt PSP have a short runway and isnt PSP very seasonal?

BFL is getting a new terminal building (FINALLY!! That old thing was outdated when Eisenhower was in office!) that should be ready sometime within the next two years.

Unfortunately, traffic to BFL is fairly limited to business and residential - tourism to the southern end of the Central Valley is virtually non-existent. When was the last time anyone said, "gee, I'd love to see the Tule fog?" or "I wonder how hot Bakersfield REALLY is in August?". Yes, I can say that, I was born and raised there.

The real killer of BFL has been LAX, and now BUR. The Airport Bus of Bakersfield runs at least eight trips a day, 24 hours a day, seven days a week from downtown Bakersfield to LAX, stopping at each terminal. It is cheaper and safer than driving (not to mention parking!!), and if your flight is late, you can get a seat on the next bus. I don't know if the bus service has been extended to BUR yet, but with Southwest flying in there, that has become a much more user-friendly airport for BFL residents picking people up.

IF B6 is going to start central valley service in addition to SMF, it would most likely be FAT. But honestly, I don't see this happening anytime soon. More than likely, BFL will see more RJ service, such as BFL-DEN or BFL-SLC before any kind of mainline service returns.

And yes, the runway really is that long - it was extended to be an alternate landing site for the space shuttle (Edwards AFB is very nearby), and Air Force One has landed there before (July, 1990).

Thank you for answering my question PanAm747.

I'm the kind of person that believes with sticking with your core customers and we succeed at NYC-Florida and California. I'm into extending the options one has when flying us to Florida or Cali since that is what we are "known for".

Thats why I wish we'd start MIA and JAX already!

If the runway in MRY were longer, I would've asked the same question. I assume though FAT is a smaller market/area then BFL?

FAT is a larger market than BFL. But FAT is located about a 3 hour drive to the SFO/OAK/SJC market or about a 3 to 4 hour drive to the BUR/LAX/ONT/SNA/LGB area. BFL sits only about 90 miles north of BUR.

Ok.

Another question then. What about JFK-MRY? Would that work? Monterey is known to NY'ers, so could that be feasable?

And could a transcon work with a 7616ft runway without having to cap flights like BUR-JFK.

RJs? Do you mean the Embraer 190s?

LGB's slot situation limits what can be done. You may be aware that all of the mainline slots are basically spoken for but that LGB does have some commuter/RJ slots available. The problem is that those slots are limited to aircraft that weigh under 75,000 pounds. The E190s that B6 is getting come in at about 110,000 pounds.

FAT's a much larger catchment area than BFL. Don't know if there'd be enough demand for JFK-FAT for A320 service, even with connection potential to upstate NY & BTV. And (if the mapper I'm using is right) it's too far for the EMB190s.

If not for the restructions on LGB, I'd say FAT-LGB would be a better choice, especially if B6 could connect a few more dots from LGB to Florida as well.

I'd love to see JFK-FAT, though...it's be so nice to fly from the Big Apple to the Big Raisin to visit friends nonstop!

Monterey might be better known but its not a large tourist destination from the NY area. It's more of a 1 or 2 day destination connected to a San Francisco area trip for east coast travellers.
