Which Airline Pilots Wear Gloves?

Fri Mar 18, 2005 7:14 am

This has always been somewhat puzzling to me. The only pilots that I have seen wearing gloves were JL and NH. But again with my limited knowledge, I can be off on that.

Are there any other airline pilots that are obligated to wear gloves during the duration of the flight? I can see some cleansy issues brought by this, but what is the true purpose of wearing gloves?

I have never seen such weird thing. Why do they do that? I think this must be very uncomfortable on long-haul flights. I only know that when I use gloves in cold weather, I am always glad to take them of.

It's white gloves. Leather ones, I think.

ZRH, I agree that its uncomfy. But they need it when they steer and stuff. When the plane levels off, then they take them off.

But at least I know they wear them when they take-off and land and approach and all that.

I only saw pilots which are wearing gloves at Japanese airlines. Maybe it is kind of tradition in Japan and that the gloves are a part of a pilot's uniform.

That is the replacement for the sidestick. These are cybergloves like we know from movies...
The pilots grab a virtual yoke and fly the airplane.
Looks funny in reality.
Some trouble during test phase though, because one pilot would not take the cyberglove off when scratching his head. They blamed in on turbulence, but the internal report is pretty clear about what happened.

Yes, it must be a Japanese tradition. You won't find it in Europe or the US. Here in Switzerland I only know one situation when a person has to wear gloves: it's in the army when the flag sergeant holds the flag  Smile

Train drivers and most taxi drivers too. I always figured it was some sort of display of professionalism, wanting to show that they take their job seriously.
