First Officer Bruce Will Fly 757 From LGW To KEF

Sat Mar 19, 2005 3:36 pm

OK....I know many (probably most) people here are not Iron Maiden fans, but I grew up in the 80's listening to Maiden....they are my all time favourite band..... Big grin

We know that Travolta has his own 707 and is a pilot for Qantas, but its cool to see other rock stars as pilots......

Bruce is also a pilot for B737 type aircraft.....

"Bruce Dickinson will be combining two of his greatest passions in June, when he combines jobs as lead singer of the worlds leading metal band IRON MAIDEN and Commercial Airline pilot with Astraeus Airlines.

First Officer Bruce will fly a specially chartered real Heavy Metal Boeing 757 from London’s Gatwick airport on Tuesday 7th June into Keflavik Airport, Iceland where he will take the stage that night with Iron Maiden to play at Reykjavic’s 15,000 capacity Egilsholin Stadium as part of the bands EDDIE RIPS UP…EUROPE 2005 Stadium and Festival Tour "

Nah. Travolta is hardly a Qantas pilot... he just allowed his plane to be painted up in the colors as a publicity deal.

As for the 707 "pilot", last I heard he wasn't currently rated on left-seat. This may have changed, but it's not been publicized.

actually you are wrong, JT holds a 747 rating, paid for by QANTAS, and has flown at least one delivery flight from PAE with a 744ER.

Since when is a 707 a 747 in type-ratings? Just because it's a bigger plane doesn't mean that your ATP covers it.

It seems like the media will make you an astronaut if you're famous enough.

Don't get me wrong, I dig the guy's acting and wish him the best. I'm just curious about what gets him around certain certs required for commercial pax flight, as in certs for an ATP.

If there's something out there that I'm missing, please blast me into the ground. I might deserve it, but I think that I'd also deserve some linkage to some factage.  Wink

Well if he's flying his friends and family on his own private airplane he really doesn't need an ATP.

JT does have a 747 qualification, he comes down here quite often to keep that rating current, he uses the simulators at QF jetbase at Sydney Airport, he's flown a flight from the US to Australia, i believe it was a passenger flight, it could have been a delivery flight, not 100% sure, but he was NOT allowed to land the aircraft.

Understood completely! I was referring moreso to this:

What about the rest of the flight-deck? I'm guessing that the folks on this flight, which were likely not friend nor family prior to the flight, were hand-holding this gentleman for the sake of flying with Mr. Travolta. Your post of his current certs just reinforces what I was saying. I'm not trying to start an argument with anyone about this. JT is an admirable person for persuing his desire for sitting in the left seat, definitely, but why the special treatment?

He may have gotten his Australian type, but that doesn't automatically transfer into an FAA type rating. Thus, there may not be an FAA airman record of his type, but he is indeed legit in Oz. Furthermore, in the ferry flights from PAE, the aircraft is then considered of Australian registry, meaning he's all set for PIC duty.

I always wondered why Bruce Dickinson got his haircut a few years back, then I was reading an article about Astraeus Airlines with his picture, I said out loud, "Hey that looks like the dude from Iron Maiden, whats he doing flying a plane?" COOL!

First of all, I think it is awesome the Bruce Dickenson is an airline pilot!!

Second, if John Travolta is qualified to fly an airliner, that is also cool and is not in anyway lesser just because he is also a famous actor. I don't think many check-airmen will sign someone off just because they are famous. In fact, I would say the opposite is probably true - they might even hold them to a higher standard.

Check Airmen tend to be pretty "No Nonsense" types, regardless of where they are from.

Let them fly! The King of Jordan used to fly his Tristar! He was acknowledged to be quite a competent pilot.

Saw him on the box the other week having a blast in the A320 development aircraft. I was surprised at just how natural and enthusiastic he came over as a TV presenter.

He certainly won't be working for Astraeus for the money anyway!

Folks, whenever I see a "Revolta-Travolta" thread it makes me smile. JT is an excellent actor and aviation enthusiast, but he is not a professional pilot. The certificate which states he is Type Rated in the G-1159, means he is rated to fly as Pilot-In-Command of that early serial number Gulfstream II that he owns up in Ocala. So five nights a week, when he flies from Jumbolair to PIE to be re-programmed at the Church of The Holy Sepulcher (Scientology), he is legally in command- the blond guy flying along satisfies legal 2 crew requirements for complex turbine aircraft and assures that Mr. Travolta will not dip below glide slope into Tampa Bay on approach to runway 17L.

JT's beautiful 1964 model Boeing 707-138 is a 3 crew aircraft, which stiplulates an FEJ or Flight Engineer Turbojet rated crew member be onboard along with the PIC and F/O. John Travolta, much to the surprise of the general public, does not kick the tires, light the JT-3's and fly it solo. At LAX, it is usually conspicuously parked south of 25L alongside the Sepulvada under pass; when he isn't promoting a film most of the time it is just parked at Ocala. Again, JT hires high time guys to insure that he doesn't inadvertently barrel roll the thing ala Tex Johnson in Dash 80. JT is not typed in the 707 or 747-400, though he did wear a snappy QUANTAS uniform when they nursed him through 744 F/O training.

The last I spoke with some of his guys, they reported he is a wonderful employer to work for, even if they do get a lot of late night T/O's and Landings each month.

I would like to see a uniform of qUantas...
I have seen QF uniform before though...
is qUantas a virtual airline for celebrities?

I guess that joke was WAY TOO inside. For all the newbie aviation trivia fans, QANTAS, the Australian airline is actually an acronym for "Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Service."

I'm a Maiden fan too!  bigthumbsup

Before Bruce joined Astraeus he flew the B757 for British World. So obviously there was no need to re-train him on the B757 for AEU.

Wouldn't surprise me if he is... But, Bruce is related to Rob Dickinson, lead singer of Cathrine Wheel. They're cousins.

I saw Catherine Wheel eons ago..I didn't know they still were around..but yes, he is the cousin of Bruce!

Ryanair737......as stated above, they are my ALL time favourite band

I've seen them on "World Piece Tour" in 1983, "World Slavery Tour" (twice) in 1985, "Somewhere On Tour" in 1986, "7th Tour of a 7th Tour" in 1988, then I stopped listening to them for about 7-8 years, then I saw them on the "Virtual XI" tour in 1998 (with Blaze Bayley on vocals!!!), then I saw them in 1999 when Bruce joined the band again, I then saw them in 2003 (Dance of Death Tour). I've had 1st-5th row in 80% of the shows.....  bigthumbsup

Anyway, I would love to be a passenger of a plane Bruce is flying...

Actually, from what I remember......Maiden chartered their own plane and would fly to the various cities which they would be playing at...now THATS COOL!

Are there any other famous people who are pilots?

First of all this went just too off topic

However, over a year ago, JT appeared at the late show with David Letterman, and then he said the he made a deal with Qantas that he will let QF paint the plane and he will become a 747-400 captain. So he did and he said that Qantas and the 747-400 training was the toughest course he has ever taken.

Letterman asked out loud to the crowd. "how many of you have a 707 ??"
he, he, he
