Thread For The Third AI 777!

Sat Mar 19, 2005 7:28 pm

So, in the young a.net tradition of Indian and other members... - everything can be posted here!

here is the thread for the third AI 777.. the first two (me, Karan) have been extremely successful, with almost 300 and 200 answers, respectively...

What is the update on the third, when will it come, how will it be named, and which routes (rumors SYD, JNB, DEL-LON, SFO, IHA) will it open??

Any pics yet, and where is the aircraft at the mom? in the same paintshup in Lousiana? Pics yet?

When was she built, and how long did she 'rust in the desert'?  bigthumbsup

Same config as the other two, and same UA cabin?

The third Air India 777 will be VT-AII (26935/88 is correct identity though).
source: http://www.airlinerlist.com. The first was VT-AIK, the second VT-AIJ .

I agree, whilst the AI livery looks fantastic on the 747, it somehow just doesn't work on the triple 7's.  frown

AI third 777 is at AFW getting fitted out with a new interior.
I took a drive out to AFW on a recent trip (last week) to Dallas see if I could see her. Sadly she must have been parked in one of the hangers.

Can't wait to see the AI 777s at YYZ!

How many 777s will Air India receive when their order is all said and done? Also, do we have any pictures of the first 2 AI 777s on the ramp together?

Three in all.

So far only one of the three 777s in the a.net database.

It's not really an order. AI is getting the 3 777 on lease. I believe two have been delivered and are in service, the last is supposed to be in service by May at the latest though I'm not sure.

The aircraft have only been together on the ramp at BOM very briefly. I tried to get a shot of them there on February 28, but there was a 744 blocking my view. They have been alternating on the operations to Heathrow recently as well as filling in on some shorthaul equipment substitutions, so they are getting a decent workout with very little ground time together.

As of Friday, the ex-UA 777 is still at AFW. It was out of the hangar on Friday afternoon (I work there). AA Maintenance is currently working on it. I know there is no paint hangar at AFW, so I'm not sure how that works; whether it is finished out and then painted or painted first and then delivered.
That's why we're here.

This is good news, and I hope it continues this way for the rest of the lease period. I would hate it if these aircraft were to have problems, since AI desperately needs to get it's act together on new aircraft (purchased or leased).

What would the dispatch reliability for the 310 or 747 aircraft be for a typical 50 day period?

If two departures per day were assumed, then the A310, 747 or 777 could be expected to have one to two delays, seeing as how dispatch reliability for these types is between 98.5% and 99.5% based on average data from all operators. There is not enough data available to say that AI 777's are performing at or better than the fleet average. However, it would seem that their stay in the desert has not hurt them and AI has done a good job in returning them to service and maintaining them operationally.

Congratulations!

On the name of the third 777, perhaps is it obligatory for the name of the Raga to contain a reference to something that can be associated with aviation (such as "cloud" or "sky" in the first two cases).

AI's second 777 (AIJ) was in revenue service service BOM to LHR on March 1 (as per B747-437B). Could someone reading this, who may have links to AI, gently suggest to the AI webbies that they could add VT-AIJ to their fleet page without fear of reprisal ? While they were doing this, it would be stellar if they could "re-engine" both aircraft with PW4090s.  Smile

If the aircraft is not listed on the fleet page, then it is not in the fleet. That is airliners.net official policy on this issue and people have been banned in the past for posting otherwise.

Lemme get this straight -- the Air India website is being cited as an authoritative source? Yowza. Last I checked, their website was a mess. Heck, their "route map" puts several cities thousands of miles from their actual locations. I had no idea youth these days were so gullible and trusting. Or so prone to pick meaningless fights.

I read this board largely for -437's unique insights on Indian aviation, not for crap that can be found on corporate websites. I wish others understood that.

By the way, I did see AIK on Feb 28, (from my plane while taking off from LHR 27L). She (AIK) would have just got into the gate, so you were probably still inside. No photo though, sorry.

Alas, my meeting that afternoon was brought forward by a few hours so I had to fly out on AZ instead (since both the early BA and AI direct flights were full) and wound up getting into Heathrow in the morning.

Can anyone explain to me how AI's 777s are rustbuckets? They sat in the desert where things DO NOT RUST. They operate perfectly fine and are more than likely younger than any other widebody in the fleet.
