AAI To Revive Juhu Airport?

Sat Mar 19, 2005 7:45 pm

In the news today:

AAI wants to revive Juhu airport and use the runway. They propose to grab the exisiting juhu-tara road area along the juhu beach front also They plan to ask BMC to construct the road under ground beneath the airport.

1. is this feasible.
2. if it goes ahead and commercial traffic starts, wouldn't it be similar to Princess Julliana, St Maarten. Would love to have that view...

Good idea! I suppose the Juhu airport will be used for private aircraft operators. Are they planning to extend the runway? What's the largest aircraft that can land at Juhu?

How do they plan to do that??? First of all, is that possible?

This has got to be the stupidest idea I have ever seen.

I'd much prefer shutting down the entire airport and building a cross-airport road in the Nanavati Hospital area to link Linking Road with Juhu beach. That would help traffic flow immensely. Right now Juhu airport is a big plot of prime land sitting underutilized and taking up space.

Mumbai needs a second airport but IMHO it is best served by building a greenfield somewhere out in Navi Mumbai with strong intermodal transportation links (rail/highway network for freight, fast ferry to Nariman Point, etc...) than expanding Juhu, whose airspace overlaps with the international airport anyway.

Apparently the Navi Mumbai Project is still on.

Personally I doubt they'd ever use Juhu for aircraft other than private operators'. So I don't really think they'd go in for a full fledged expansion.
Guru any links to that report.

The new airport is already under construction, as not too long ago my friend was driving from Mumbai to Goa and happened to pass
"the huge site with New Mumbai Airport written and construction was in progress"

If this is true, they should have thought of it before they moved the parking lot!  crazy

It's now across the road from where it used to be and they've taken away a chunk of the airport to make room for it.

And Bombay really does not need a new airport. They really do need to bring all the terminals down and start from scratch. We might be the busiest in the entire region, but O'Hare we ain't. Besides, the advantaged of being in the middle of the city are immense.

Just think of the traffic conditions that will prevail on the already congested Ville parle and juhu roads--if such a thing in anyones wildest dreams does take place
