Orders For Fairchild 728Jet?

Wed Apr 05, 2000 7:43 am

Other than Lufthansa and Sol Air (and those Envoy 7 orders), any guesses on who will order the 728?

Also, with the market that includes the CRJ700, and EMB 170....any comments on whether the market can sustain all three manufacturers?

RE: Orders For Fairchild 728Jet?

I think by far the biggest problem for the 728JET are the pilot scope clauses which keep numbers of regional jets at a certain level in order to maintain the integrity of mainline versus regional flying. At 90+ seats, its a RJ that would almost certianly steal away smaller mainline sectors.

The 328JET and 428JET have got few orders as it is (although they will come on the scene later than the CRJ and ERJ). However they will be the only choice for any airline that wants an RJ before 2004 since the orderbooks are absolutely full at Canadair and Embraer.

Whether or not a market exists for a jet of the ERJ 170/190 and DO228 category remains to be seen. It will have to overcome some stiff competition in the name of the various pilot unions.

Europe/North-America

Here are several carriers rumoured to be interested.
Eurowings: Good chances that the 728JET is the winner, maybe it has to share the order with the RJX.
VLM: Several times rumoured to be interested in two 728JET.
Air Botnia: Order for up to 6 728JET likely.
BRAL: Not so sure who will get this order. Maybe the same as Eurowings.
Cityflyer Express: Same as BRAL and Eurowings.

Scope clauses are the biggest problem in North-America. Only carriers I see to be potential customers for the 728JET are Continental Express and US Airways. Maybe United Express, too. In Canada Air Canada and Canadian Regional are canidates.

Asia/Australia

In Asia the chances to sell the 728JET should be limited. China is a country where some might be sold.
Vietnam Airlines is a possibility I can think about, they have said serveral times that they want to enlarge their fleet so either 2nd-hand F70s or new 70-seaters could be in the race.
UNI Air, Taiwan, has been rumoured to be interested in some 728JET but I haven´t heard anything about them for quite some time.
In Indonesia I see some need for a replacement of the old F28s, several dozends are still flying there.
InAustralia, Qantas is looking on the 728JET/ERJ-170 and the newly launched RJX. Best chances: RJX, followed by the 728JET and the last the ERJs.

Latin-America/Africa

Thu Apr 06, 2000 2:45 am

For Africa I don´t see any 728JET or ERJ-170 orders in the near future. If we count the Middle East, too, Arkia (Israel might be a guess as they have to replace some Dash7, about 10.

In Latin-America, the only carrier I can think about is Southern Winds of Argentina. They have requested proposals from the manufactures, especially Bombardier, to increase their fleet. Embraer and Fairchild shouldn´t be the likely choice.
