WN Pilots Fight To Fly Past The Age 60

Mon Mar 21, 2005 12:22 pm

Just wondering what you think of this? Me personally, if the pilot can pass all required tests, check-up's and stay in perfect health, I say go for it.

I think if anyone has a beef with "older" pilots in the cockpit, maybe there could be a provision saying " Only 1 60+ pilot on the flight deck as either CA or FO, but not two." Then that may put at ease anyone afraid of two old pilots (With inaccountable anount of experience and knowledge) in the cockpit.

Wasn't this restriction recently overturned in the EU? Isn't this set to be overturned in the US? Southwest pilots can fight all they want but its the FAA that makes that decision.

it is only a matter of time before this change takes place. this is the United States, and the policy discriminates.

and personally, i like a little gray hair in the cockpit.

I concur, if people are allowed to drive until they're blind or have some sort of medical colditions (epilepsy, etc.) than they should be able to fly planes. I would say cap off at 70. Hell, John Glenn went into space at 76, so why not?

I am also for the age of retirement for commercial pilots being raised to 65!

Hope it happens soon.

Someone else started the legal stuff; all the SWA pilot group did was to file a "friend of the court" brief in support of the actions of the initiating group....

"Friend of the court," known in legalese as "amicus curiae." Mostly something that makes the group writing it look good and add a little something to the pro side of the argument.

Absolutely, my point being that SWA pilots were not on the tip of the spear here, some other group was...  Wink

I like the idea of flying past 60 (I feel that modern medicine is certainly up to the task of keeping people healthy enough), but like SprxUSA said, only one 60+ in the cockpit. Though I have to say that I do not know of any 60+ FOs.

Obviously given the current rule there aren't any 60+FOs or captains for that matter. When Delta used to put out the monthly Delta Digest(internal news magazine) they included a list of the latest retirees. There were always several FOs retiring with 30+years of service.

As for raising or eliminating the mandatory retirement age for pilots, I'm all for it as long as they can pass the physicals. However, with the current state of the industry and with many pilots facing losing their pension I doubt you'd get many takers any time soon. Those near retirement age have in most cases been grandfathered in to the old plans if they retire before a certain date.

I sense that the potential curtailment of the cushy pensions for pilots at the legacy carriers has caused them to be less particular over the potential safety implications of allowing age-60+ pilots to fly. I would agree that the proposition carries little additional risk - that instead of a hard and fast, bright-lined rule, the FAA should consider the particular physical capabilities of each individual. Some 65-, even 70-year-olds are as alert and capable as someone aged 55; others are not.

SWA filed its amicus brief largely because LCC pilots have had - and will have - an incentive to work longer, absent the generous pensions pilots at legacies have heretofore used to putter around the golf course.

There was an interesting AP article on this last week.

I'm scared enough when I see a 60+ yo barreling towards me in his Ford Crown Vic. Last thing I want is him flying an airplane.

That's just as much an inaccurate generalization as saying that -all- SDSU students are idiots, isn't it?  Wink When you get older yourself, I suspect that your opinion(s) on age-related issues just may change...

The age 60 retirement issue was never rooted in science/medicine to begin with back in 1959, and if pilots can meet today's requisite medical standards, they should be able to fly beyond 60 to 63 or 65, whatever they decide upon.

How old was Chuck Yeager when he retired from flying an F15,???? More than 60, I believe he still flies his Mustang.Bob Hoover was unlicensed by the US, he came to OZ and was soon flying again, havingpassed all the required medicals etc.I would have loved to be the examiner that sat in with him during a test flight in a Shrike Comander. We are all getting older, and some of us still have our wits about us.

Im all for it. I say at most 70 years old...

If Doctors are allowed to cut me open and Judges allowed make their decisions well into their 70's and 80's I say allow the PROFESSIONAL Pilot to continue flying until 70!!! Or 65!!! All the while meeting FAA standards.

Here in the Desert Southwest, its the Buick drivers...you see a Buick coming towards you, look out!

I think the age should be raised, as long as they are able to pass all the exams.
