Again A Foreign Carrier Into North Korea

Tue Mar 22, 2005 2:26 am

China Southern Airlines will operate into FNJ on a twice weekly flight from Shenyang to Pyongyang. Flight CZ651 will leave SHE on day 1 and 5 at 0730 and will return the same day from FNJ to SHE as CZ652 at 1000 and arrives 0940. Equipment will be M90.

During the last few years, the only foreign carriers flying into North Korea have been Chinese Airlines including China Northwest or China Northern from PEK, SHE or DLC.

During the last few years, foreign carriers operating into the DPRK operated only during summer. The only exception where some charters operated by KE and OZ from Seoul.

Just out of curiousity, who are the passengers on these flights? Business? Tourism? Family?

Well, you will have all of them. But mainly Officials and Chinese people working in the DPRK. Out of the tourists, most of them would be Chinese. Would say little VFR.

No, they don't. All Domesic Air Koryo flights are based on a charter operation only using mainly Il-18 planes.

Some kind of "Favoured Nation Status"? I thought DPRK was a closed country?
What other nations can share passengers with DPRK? Former USSR? Vietnam?

Most likely none, unless you're a member of the ruling party.

What type of aircraft will be operating the service?
Mainline aircraft or Regional jet?
I don't know what CZ's fleet is made up of, but I do know it's no more than 325km between the two cities...hence an RJ possibility.

Original post says MD-90.

I would note that this is a new airline to North Korea in name only...China Southern acquired China Northern, so this is really just a resumption of previous China Northern service from SHE to FNJ.

All nationalities can visit the DPRK if obtaining a Visa before your trip with the exception of US and ROK citizen.

VFR might consist mainly of people from the DPRK working in China and Russia.

Yes, I recently went on a package tour of China, and one of the offered add ons was an extension to North Korea although this was travelling by train.
I would have been interested but it was very expensive at about £600 for a few days.

I read that CZ and MU are in the process of selling all their MD-90s to Iran Asseman Airlines so CZ may possibly fly something else there.

Posting says "Again a foreign carrier into North Korea". So beside it's national carrier Air Koryo it could be only China Southern. In other words, your answer is already in the first post. Or did you miss out a "d" at operate?

In that case you could ad a few other airlines like:
Interflug
Aeroflot
China Northern
China Northwest

I don't think that CSA, Cubana and other carriers ever operated as scheduled service into the DPRK.

If not mistaken, only Albright made it into the DPRK but not President Clinton.

I don't know which plane she took ...
