ATL Worldport Busiest Overall

Tue Mar 22, 2005 1:55 pm

According to prelimenary data, ATL is tops for 2004 in overall pax. and movements. I thought ORD would beat everyone out in movements but bad weather in Dec. was probably a factor. Now the Southeast U.S. is King if you also include MEM for cargo.

I don't believe it! I think this will be a mistake by ACI. If you look on the airport websites you will find these figures:

ATL-Pax: 83,606,583
ATL-Mvmnts.: 919,139

ORD-Pax: 75,507,488
ORD-Mvmnts.: 990,957

Btw.
You get nearby the same figures if you add the ACI-YTD-Nov.-figures + the ACI Dec.-monthly-figures:

ORD ACI Nov. 04 YTD+ ACI Dec. monthly: 909.686 + 80.913 = 990.599
ATL ACI Nov. 04 YTD+ ACI Dec. monthly: 884.491 + 80.367 = 964.858

I am still amazed that ORD and ATL "compete" for the title of world's busiest airport and eagerly seek to claim the title. While that may have been something to be proud of in the 1970s, today that means passing though those airports will be more crowded and prone to delays. I cringe at the thought of having to go to those airports precisely because they are so busy. I would prefer to be in an airport to be empty.

When the new runway at ATL opens and particularly if restrictions at ORD remain in place or are tightened, it will probably leave ATL with the highest number of aircraft movements as well.

Does anyone know where there are airports listed by O&D traffic? I suspect that the list of airports by O&D traffic would be quite different, with airports like LAX, LGA, and JFK at the top of the list (and on my list of airports to avoid).

Well, AADC10, if empty airports is what your are looking for, then find some small field in the middle of nowhere and then that is what you will get. And airlines are losing money now, just imagine if only one American or United jet landed every hour at O'Hare, the industry would be shut down. Good idea!!!

Even if ATL didn't catch the title of World's Busiest Airport as per movements, they will this year because of 2 factors:
-DL adding 81 new fights per day, which adds up to around 54,000 additional movements this year.
-ORD still being limited in movements by the FAA to keep delays down.
Not to mention that ATL's 5th runway is also on schedule. And pax-number wise ATL will grow its advantage over ORD.

IM not sure if there is a Origin and destination traffic report for all? But I know there are some that have individual airport O&D Traffic.

Here is the website where the ACI Lists can be found, they contain monthly, annually, safety, and economic reports.

The First Equity Aviation Almanac will have it for the top 100 airports in the world and N.America... it can be found at any major library, bookstore.

If however you cannot locate it, I'll post the figures when I get a chance.

Hopefully ATL's new runway will alleviate some of the delays that DL/Airtran expansion might cause. Just drove under it Sunday, and the I-285 overpass is immense--quite an engineering feat. Are there other major airports that come to mind with major interstates passing beneath runways/taxiways? All I can think of are access roads at JFK, DFW and CDG.
