New Series Of "Airport" On BBC1 Tomorrow

Tue Mar 22, 2005 7:18 pm

Well, either today or tomorrow. I was just seeing what's on TV tonight, and according to Yahoo, Airport is on tonight and tomorrow night.

But according to the Radio Times it's on tomorrow night (and Holby City is on tonight).

Either way, they both have the same description of the programme, I don't think I've seen this one before:

Documentary series which goes behind the scenes at Heathrow. It's an early morning start for journalists Steve and Russell who are on the trail of a 1970s superstar who has been banned from entering America and sent back to the UK. At the Animal Reception Centre, Stuart has to perform a mercy dash which leaves him with a dilemma. And in the terminal, the police are called to deal with passengers who have been waiting to fly for ten days.

And the Radio Times have this next to it:

Excellent - must be new, I suspect the 'superstar' is Cat Stevens, so it's fairly recent! Good to see it back at last!

Sounds like the Ghana Air fiasco, so this must be a new series. Every time it goes I'm sure thats the last of it, but the good old Beeb keep bringing it back  Wink

Russell Clisby is the photographer. Steve Mellor is the reporter.

The original 'Airport' programme was based on the exploits of veteran photographer Dennis Stone,
who still does weekend newspaper work at LHR.

Dennis started work there in 1947, firstly with BOAC, and later as freelance.

He will celebrate the 73rd anniversary of his birthday in June!

Oh dear, John Nettles commentary has gone, replaced by a patronising female commentrary which is akin to a Childrens Pre School eductation programme.

9 minutes in and her voice is annoying me aleady!!

No that one is called "airline" and is about easyJet.

This is "Airport", and is about LHR.

thought tonights show was absolutely awful, as I posted above, the voice over just ruined the whole ambience of the show.

I guess I'll still watch the rest of the series, but the commentary was simply awful  Sad.

Isn't that Stelios, not Helios?  Smile

I didn't think the new Airport was too bad. The titles are the start are a bit crap, and some of the sound effects are a bit dodgy, but it was ok. I wonder if we'll see any more of the people from the old series in future episodes.. like Shaker  bigthumbsup

Oh no they got rid of John Nettles and replaced the commentary with Lisa Tarbuck! Unfortunately the only person we see from the old series is that animal officer, its supposed to be Airport, not Animal Hospital! But was an OK episode I guess.

I thought the commentary was terrible, the women made everything sound HunkeyDorey, and it sounded like a Airport programme for Junior school kids.

They have also changed the music! Why fix it if it wasn't broken?

Mind you, the episode was O.K

Cheers, Ryan  Smile

I like it, as it is still related to the airport's operations, although the feature tonight was not.

Because you can ALWAYS improve everything - but in this case it was not an improvement.

Ho Hum, I missed it!  Sad .... I agree that John Nettles made the original programmes. My personal favourite character on the original series was the Terminal 2 Immigration Officer Eric " I don't believe you " Day. I can't imagine how any visitor who came through LHR T2 ever made it into the country!

Ah flip! Missed it. But if they got rid of Nettles, then it won't be as good. He was very droll.

I watched tonights episode. Didn't enjoy it as much as the older ones hence the Qatar Airways bit was pretty interesting. I've noticed they're featuring more airlines in the newer series.

and yeah, the new female narrator is annoying.

A few years back the older Airport series were screened here in the USA on Discovery Wings. I thought they were totally cool.

Does anybody know if BBC plans to sell the series on DVD?

He was great. I remember in one episode he was searching someone's bag for documents and broke it.

I don't like the new voice of airport. It is the most condescending patronizing voice ever.

That program sucks IMO, it did prompt me to go down LHR for a late spot though, and i saw the QR A330 that was on it.

I think they were scrapping the barrel to show the rescue of a squirrel (which wasn't even on the airport premises). A few more shouty/idiot pax needed to spice things up a bit.

Yet another BBC series which has served it's time. I thought I was watching 'Animal Hospital' for most of it. As they said grey squirrels are vermin - no different to rats - it should have been put down when it was first found and I suspect it would have been if it hadn't been for the TV crew, but that's not 'aaahhh' TV is it?
