Help With Best Spotting Locs SYD/Auckland

Thu Mar 24, 2005 8:32 am

Can anyone advise me where to go at these two fine airports!

I heard there is a carpark in Auckland?

Any outdoor location to catch landings/takeoffs at SYD?

Many thanks in advance...

Soundtrack, I can only help you in SYD as I was there last week.

What I would recommend is that you go to the departures level of the international terminal.

On the left hand side of the building, go to the sky cafe and watch for signs that take you to the observation deck.

There is a very nice observation deck where if you have a lens of around 200mm or so you can get some nice shots of landings and takeoffs on what I believe to be Runway 16R.

There also other ways to get around to good locations at SYD but I didn't have a car and wasn't too adventurous. I just tried to walk to the threshold of runway 16R but turned back eventually because I didn't want to get run over.

I am currently developing the film from my spotting trip and hopefully some of my shots will be good enough to finally get uploaded on a.net.

Here is a useful weblink to the information that I used to spot at SYD:

Anyway, here are some shots in the database that I believe were taken from the observation deck that I speak so highly of:

I'm not so sure about that QF A330, if it was taken from the observation deck then thats a pretty good lens that guy has got. But I can vouch that the bottom two shots were taken from the obs deck.

Best of luck and let me know if I can be of any help.

Heres a link to a map of AKL.

AKL-map.htm" target=_blank>http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~airdata/AKL-map.htm

The main spotting locations are marked with the numbers with pink circles around them. For locations 3 and 4 you ideally need a car to get to them, ideal spot for side on shots of landing aircraft if it is rwy 23L in use. Location 5 gives you a good view of the main runway and taxiway, and is ideal for taking photos.

There are a few places at SYD.

If you dont have a car then the best place is the Observation deck at the International terminal.

With a car, then you need to drive around to where the hire car depots are. Its easy to find, it is a road with all the helicopter ports on it. Continue around past long tern car park, and then you go 'off road' a bit. this takes you to the edge of the runway and is pretty cool. I am sorry that my directions are crap, but to look it another way - if you drive around and come to the bit of the runway/taxi area that goes over the road, then you have made it.

Usually, the planes just rotate infront of you, an you can tell the full and the not so full ones, by the amount of runway they use.

I also advise looking at that website.

Happy watching.

There are three good carparks at AKL. The best carpark is when 23L is in use, but this carpark is an Air NZ staff carpark. This location is number 5 on the map. The other two require the use of a vehicle. These are numbers 3 and 4 on the map.

When are you planning on being in AKL? I'm going to be in AKL near the end of September, as NZs first B772ER will be arriving from its delivery flight then.

The best spot for spotting is the roof of number 2 hangar. However you need to work for Air NZ Maintenance to get to it. Lucky me. Awesome views of the entire airport, especially once Runway 05L/23R is in use from April 3rd.

I think the car park at the side or Runway 23 is good, other wise the 'skydeck' which allows you only a limited view. AKL is very limited for the public
