Air Tahiti Nui JFK-PPT

Fri Mar 25, 2005 6:08 am

According to my PADI diving newsletter, Air Tahiti Nui is starting flights direct from New York to Papeete. Anyone know if they are getting more A340's for their new flights? Is a 13h flight in a -300 pushing the endurance envelope?

I believe they are taking delivery of one more A340-300 for this route which is supposed to start this summer.

Not really. AC just finished their Northern Winter run of a nonstop SYD-YVR service which clocks in at 14h 40m, using 340-300 metal. Admittedly there was some form of weight restrictions placed on the flight as SYD-YVR would be considered at the far end of the endurance envelope, being over 7,000 statute. JFK-PPT is only 6,289 statute so the -300's max range of some 7,400 statute makes this route well within levels.

Yes, Air Tahiti Nui is getting a 5th A340-300, a brand new example. The additional aircraft will allow the airline to operate the JFK-PPT flights, 3 times per week I believe, plus the new aircraft will allow them to add/increase frequencies on routes to Sydney and Japan, I believe. Air Tahiti Nui also wants a piece of the New York-Sydney market, so dont be surprised if the flights are operated JFK-PPT-SYD, with a short connection time in PPT or maybe even continuing same aircraft service.

The JFK-PPT flight should not be a problem for the A343, the aircraft has more than enough range, especially in the newer/improved versions. Air Tahiti did look at the A345 (mainly for a proposed PPT-CDG nonstop), but elected against it for several reasons, mainly because the airline would find it very unecomical operating only one of the type.

The A340-300's max range is 7400 nautical, not statute.

PPT-JFK is well within its limits.

I flew 3 times LAX-PPT with Air Tahiti Nui and I loved it!
Excellent service and great legroom. The A340's are beautiful inside out.  Smile

Exactly the plan is certainly to get a slice of the SYD-NYC market and I believe they will be same plane service, though SYD operates 2 weekly and JFK 3 weekly.

OJH, TN don't fly to SYD yet with their own metal.

I have done a SFO-HKG flight on a 343 where the actual flying time was 15 hours and 49 minutes. Therefore I would hardly call 13 hours "pushing" anything.

No this service starts in July. The currently have a codeshare in place with Qantas or Air NZ, Can't remember which, to AKL.

Well, good luck to TN with the JFK-PPT route.

A great airline with a beautiful bird. They one of the best, if not the best, color scheme in the industry.

Yeah there is, and throughout NYC. In addition to the website there is going to be local media/tv support in the NYC area (NYC, CT, NJ, Long Island).

The campaign was created by the Ad Agency I work at: SAATCHI & SAATCHI. my coworkers created the campaign and I have a lovely Air Tahiti Nui A340 on my desk as a result!

Does anybody know if there is a realistic chancxe that there will, in fact, be a JFK-PPT-SYD flight by Jan/Feb, 2006? I am getting ready to make some reservations for travel JFK-SYD during that time and would hold off a bit if there was a realistic chance there will be a JFK-PPT-SYD flight.

By the way, while I think of it, do they belong to any frequent flyer program of the US legacy carriers?

747firstclass -
You can redeem AA AAdvantage and NW WorldPerks miles for travel on Air Tahiti Nui, but you can not earn them when you fly on them. A kind of unique frequent flyer set-up! I believe they have also signed an agreement with DL that may not have come into effect yet - whether this will be a similar redeem only set-up is yet to be seen.

They are already selling JFK-PPT-SYD on their own metal. The prices are pretty high at the moment. They are also pretty high for just the JFK-PPT legs. I have taken them twice out of LAX -PPT, and still prefer them to Air France, but unless they offer more competitive fares, it seems like connecting through LAX still might remain the best for both SYD, and PPT routes. Time will tell, but I am sure they will add some great competition in the long run.

Now I can't speak with any authority on TN plans but on 19th March this looked like Air Tahiti Nui metal at SYD

http://www.pbase.com/chrisg/image/41289464

At 9:23 it was being towed to Int. Terminal for what I was told would be an 11AM departure for PPT/JFK. It may have been a route proving/promotional visit.

Picture is not A.net material for a whole bunch of reasons Sad

Damn, you must have a huge desk!! Seriously, if anyone has a chance to visit Tahiti, and specifically Moorea and Bora Bora, you must go. It is the most beautiful place on earth, and the people are extremely welcoming and freindly.

TN currently operates to AKL, and codeshares with QF AKL-SYD.

TN commences 2pw services to Sydney in July, on Monday and Sat i belive.
flight arrives SYD 0655, departs 0915.

I think there are already plans for a 3rd weekly service with connections to JFK.

Air Tahiti Nui have taken out a billboard in Times Square advertising the new service, with a special website for the service:
