Status of Garuda's 744s?

Fri Mar 25, 2005 7:19 am

I know Garuda stopped flying to Europe, but what happened to the planes that were used for these flights (744's). Are they parked somewhere, sold or leased to somebody? Do they have plans returning to Europe?

GA is currently short of widebody aircrafts to keep up their current Asia, Australia and Middle East network. With all B747-200s and DC10s were retired, GA only has 6x A330-300s and 3 B747-400s (that is less than 10 widebody aircrafts).

The 747-400s are usually use on Middle East (e.g. Riyadh and Jeddah) and DPS-CGK-NRT rotation.

Three B744 (PK-GSG/GSH/GSI) are still in active service, and are currently used for the daily CGK-NRT-DPS-CGK rotation, for the daily CGK-HKG rotations (thrice weekly via SIN) and for Garuda's Middle East network CGK-JED and CGK-RUH-DMM.

Garuda still has two active DC10-30 airframes (PK-GIB/GIC), but they are bound to be retired by March 31. For the time being a DC10 is still deployed on the daily CGK-MES-BTJ route.

The backbone of Garuda's international mediumhaul network is the A333, with currently six active airframes (PK-GPA/GPC/GPD/GPE/GPF/GPG), deployed on flights from CGK to PEK, SHA (via SIN and direct), CAN and DPS to KIX, NGO, FUK, SYD, MEL, BNE, ADL, AKL and SIN.

Garuda's widebody fleet can occasionally be found on busy domestic sectors, noticeably CGK-DPS, but also SUB-DPS and CGK-SUB and others.

My apologies if this is off-topic. I suspected but didn't know that Garuda had discontinued service to Europe (see quotation above).

Is this actually true?

How does one find out what their current scheduled operations are? Their website doesn't seem to be updated very often, and its schedule information could be better... Come to think of it, it seems their adherence to that schedule is a bit impressionistic - but that's another story.

I've never flown them and actually would really enjoy the opportunity. It was romantic to see their 747 at LGW, "many years ago"...

Also, does Merpati Nusantara (sp?) have a website? I've only been able to find an old one that lists only domestic flights, and another that's for the holding company, Merpati - not just the airline.

Again, please excuse me if this is overly off-topic.

Garuda stopped flying to Amsterdam (their last destination in Europe) around the fourth quarter of last year.

I do not know where to find their most updated schedule as I do not think there is any web resources that can provide an accurate one.

As for merpati, they used to have a website.. it was www.merpati.co.id but it is not working anymore. I read an article in local Indonesian newspaper about Merpati launching their website in addition to the online booking. However, I yet to discover their website.

Garuda serves Europe via codeshares operated by Malaysia Airlines via KUL to LHR, MAN, FRA, CDG & FCO. I believe Garuda would want to codeshare to AMS too since they dropped the route, but so far GA flight numbers have yet to appear on the AMS daily flights.

For Merpati Nusantara, I managed to salvage their route network map (as of early 2004) before their website was shut down.

Actually Garuda's website www.garuda-indonesia.com is pretty much updated, and schedules found on there are accurate. The website also shows Garuda's arrival and departure information for airports within Indonesia, and availability of seats on all of Garuda's flights.

Actually, Garuda flew the DPS-BKK-LGW route thrice weekly as late as two years ago only, so it can't have been that many years ago. The B744 was parked at LGW for the better part of half a day.

The situation with the Amsterdam code share remains unresolved and very much up in the air as Garuda is still planning to relaunch its own operations to Europe, with Amsterdam an obvious candidate for such a service. Nobody really knows how it's going to work out. A new management has just come in at Garuda, so they might decide differently from their predecessors on Europe services.

Let's hope the new management can bring back a coherent strategy and end all this cluelessness in Garuda...

MAS and KLMs AMS-KUL services already carry Air France and Northwest codes and are doing extremely well with KLM planning to increase availability to KUL this summer by switching some flights to full-pax (as oppose to 74Es). Should GA want to code-share too - I think a problem may be the lack of availability although both KLM and MAS should do well to get GA on-board this route (for revenue).

yes, 744s on domestic services. flew the 744 on the upper deck (was all treated as Y pax) from DPS to CGK. Their service is good.
I wonder how AMS would pan out if or when reinstated given the new visa requirement. was talking to a friend who found out that he, as a dutch citizen, actually has to get a visa in advance and not visa on arrival as the rest of us in europe ! Any chance they will be back to Paris ? AMS FRA London seem to be the logical choice given their recent past routes...but they did serve CDG ages ago too.

The visa requirements for Dutch citizens are about to be undone, and in the near future the Dutch can obtain a tourist visa on arrival, just like other European citizens. Indonesian government has realized that too many Dutch tourists stay away from Indonesia because they refuse to buy an (expensive) visa.

To be precise only KLM flights carry AF, NW & MH codes. MH own flights carry only KL code, so I don't see any problem for GA to get onboard.

Photos keep popping up of one of the birds in BNE, but it used to float over to AMS as well. Has that stopped now? I believe they are all leased short-term.. correct me if I'm wrong. Just heard it somewhere.

The 744's did do some OZ-NZ flights for a while last year, they were seen in AKL, BNE, MEL and SYD a few times.

At one stage they were rumoured to be looking to lease an additional 744, not sure what happened to that plan.

Actually, it's more than just that. KLM will increase AMS-KUL-CGK from 5 weekly to daily, with some of the flights for the first tie in an all pax configuration rather than with Combis. At the same time, Singapore will receive a daily dedicated service from AMS. Currently, the AMS-SIN flight is continued to CGK twice weekly, on the days no AMS-KUL is operated.

Garuda has previously operated B744s on the DPS-BNE-AKL route, as well as on a special DPS-SYD-MEL triangle (normally GA operates DPS-SYD and DPS-MEL seperately) as a substitution for the regular A333 on those routes. Currently, however, the 744s are firmly fixed on the NRT, HKG and JED/RUH/DMM routes.

A delegation led by Boeing's Vice President for Asia was in town last week regarding the matter. Unfortunately the Boeing visit was caught between the management reshuffle. The first day of the visit, Boeing's delegation met with Garuda's old management, but as it became clear at the end of the day that the management was about to be replaced, a new meeting was arranged with Garuda's incoming management.

All I can disclose at this point is that some progress has been made in the case of Garuda's pending B777 order, but that a number of issues still need to be clarified. I am confident though that Garuda, sooner or later, will take delivery of some type of B777.

sorry for the off topic question, anyone know what's the latest news regarding Munir's murder on a cgk-ams flight back in sep04? Anyone found guilty yet? Is this got to do with the sacking of Garuda's boss? He died some 3 hours before landing in AMS because of poisoning, did the pilot make any request for emergency landing? How about the stewardess, any involvement?

HB-IWC: Thanks for the info!

Has the date been pushed back farther from Oct06 or ? GA would be a prime candidate for the -200LR since it will enable them to fly nonstop to Europe from both CGK and DPS. Same also for possible new service to LAX.

Honkong flights have been operating with B744 for the past couple of weeks. No A333s in HKG for the time being.

There's also a twice weekly nonstop CGK-PVG service, operated with A333, in addition to the three weekly flights that go via SIN.

Any type is really possible at this point. The decision has not been made yet. All depends on future network development.
