Question About This Photo...

Thu Apr 06, 2000 3:36 am

I was curious when ELAL received their first B747? I looked @ the picture below and noticed an ELAL B747 (I think!!) in the background and then saw the date of the image (1969!!!); is that right?

I don't know for sure whether you're right. However I've found in World airlines fleets 1978 an ELAL B747-100 (4X-AXZ) with c/n 19735. This aircraft can very good been delivered in 1969 as a B747-100 with c/n 19733 (Polar N855FT) was delivered in 1970 (c/n 19734 was also delivered in 1970 and flying as N602FF for Tower). If Boeing first deliverd 19735 than it's possible that the date on the phote is correct.

According to the Boeing website, the first El Al 747 was delivered on May 26th 1971:

Delivery Date Customer Name Model Engine Total
May 26, 1971 EL AL ISRAEL AIRLINES 747-200 JT9D 1

I also checked some other sites, all with the same result. Maybe the picture wasn't taken in 69? Maybe El Al leased the aircraft and put it in its own colors before it bought its own?

El Al's first 747 was 4X-AXA (msn 20135/ln 140) delivered in May 1971.

Msn 19733-35 were all -124s originally delivered to Continental in 1970. All three were repurchased by Boeing when CO retired their original 747s in early 1974.

733 and 735 were sold to the Iranian Air Force and converted to freighters. 734 was to go to Iran, but ended up being leased out to a series of operators until Tower bought it.

Iran sold 733 and 735 back to Boeing in 1977-78. 735 went to El Al in June, 1977. 733 went through a number of owners until ending up with Polar.

Hmm now that I think about it, didn't Pan Am put the 747 into service in 1970, and it first flew in February of 69? Maybe the picture was taken in 1979 and not '69? Was El Al even a launch customer?

Nope, both 1969, 1970 and 1979 are ruled out.... El Al definitely didn't fly ANY 747s before May 1971. A clue is the Egyptair Il-62 in the background; Egyptair only flew the Il-62 between June 1971 and June 1973, they probably already withdrew the last ones around december 1972. The TWA 707 doesn't help much, it wears the old twin-globe colours, 707s like these could be found till the late 70s. So the photo must be made between June 1971 and around december 1972.
More info on each 707, 747 and Il-62 operational histories can be found on http://people.a2000.nl/sverb

I'm the photographer and I just made my best guess at the date. I had no idea it would generate all this, but it is sometime between '68 - '71 because that's when I was commuting on 707s between Jeddah and London. If someone can pinpoint the date better than I, please go ahead and modify the data, that's fine. I'm more territorial about my comments! haha

I include some of these photos, not for their sharpness or details of EXACT dates (I'm doing the best I can), only to share them and hopefully bring pleasure to others. I had a poor camera and even in those days, airports did not wash their windows that often. Also, these are 30 year old photos and not enlargements. If you enjoy these photos, I'm happy.

George, I dont know about others, but I for one, love old pictures such as these, and the quality really does not matter. It interesting to see how things were 30, 40, even 50 years ago during the jet age. Keep em coming if you have them! Thanks!!

No, sure I (and I guess others) don't critize you, your photo is great, there are so few color pictures around of non-american aircraft of the 60s and 70s. As I wrote earlier, and together with your story (you stopped commuting in '71), your photo must be dated june-december 1971!
