FR To CTA?

Fri Mar 25, 2005 10:53 pm

What is the likelihood of FR commencing a daily STN-CTA (Sicily) service? The airline currently flies STN-PMO (Sicily)) twice-daily. Italy is a key market for the airline.

Now I think of it, didn't FR previously serve CTA? Did it also serve Cagliari (Sardinia)? I seem to recall... Anyway, Cagliari is now served by U2 from LTN, and Olbia from LGW, but Olbia was never previously served by FR.

Sardinia is being served by the airline through AHO, with four routes to date: STN (twice-daily), HHN (daily), GRO (daily) and CIA (daily).

Yes: twice-daily to STN. Have flown NQY-STN a couple of times. Almost always full. Have flown the route in winter and it had good loads. It must be full to bursting during the summer, when yields must be very good.

Referring to the initial question...

FR had previously served CTA!
But they decided to leave because the airport authorities were not able (or willing) to undertake any measures to reduce delays originating from the ground handling.
FR had a very good loadfactor/yield on the flights to CTA but the constant delays of the a/c at CTA was spoiling the on-time performance too much!
FR can´t afford constant delays at an airport if this means they can´t maintain the calculated number of flown legs per aircraft per day just because an airport is unable to cope...

This was a rather unusual situation in the LCC-industry but FR had no other choice!
FR promised to return to CTA if the airport authority guarantees on-time ops.
So far they did not promise...

I see, thanks.

Yes, FR's punctuality is normally very good and is one reason why people fly with the carrier.

One would not automatically expect that such an airport like CTA - which is anything but busy - would have any problem concerning delays. Why more delays than at any other airport? Could you explain more about the ATC and ground-handling problems?

Sorry, i have no further details...

I don´t work for FR...

But the story i wrote depends on FR´s comment when they pulled out of CTA. I also got some confirmation regarding that from people that travelled to/from CTA! So, it seems that FR didn´t tell this as a "fake" excuse.

Flight to CTA was only charter. They never flew scheduled there. Indeed they served SUF in Calabria in 2000 from STN as a low cost service.
