The Role Of The B747 Vrs B777

A number of airlines have been replacing their B747 with B777 for both pax an cargo. What advantages does the B777 offer that would warrant an airliner chosing it over the B747? Is the B777 mostly replacing the B747 200 or is it a good replacement to the B747-400 as well? What roles would the B747-400 better serve than the B777.?

Well the 747 is bigger. I wouldn't say much bigger then a 773 but it is bigger so it would be used on routes where a 777 isn't big enough just like a 777 being used instead of a 767/A330. What I'm trying to say is bigger isn't always better. That is why the A380 won't completely replace the 747, there are some routes that will handle a 747 but not the extra capacity of the A380. Im sure someone will make an example.

Some airlines are or want to replace the 747s with 773ERs. In a three class layout, there is not much of a difference in pax capacity, so the 773 is a suitable 747 replacement. In cargo the 773 is better then the 747, because it could take more LD3 containers, due to its extra length.

Airlines have been using 777-200ER's as replacements for 747 "Classics" i.e. the -100 & -200. They also use them to down-gauge at off-peak times; KE did this on their IAD-SEL (ICN) route and NH did it on IAD-NRT due to reduced demand.

CO is an excellent example of using a 772ER instead of a 744 for economic reasons, on EWR-HKG: not a big enough market for them to justify the capacity of a 744; 772ER better economics in general vs. a 744 especially once you factor in the aquisition or lease cost of having to get 744's in the first place. We will see more of this once the new 777-200LR goes in service with PK & BR. Allows airlines to serve ultra-long-haul niche markets without too much capacity.
