What's Up With Florida Airports Today?

Sat Mar 26, 2005 2:23 am

I was looking on some airline's websites and I noticed that FLL,RSW,TPA, and MCO all have ATC delays with no weather problems.
Does this happen a lot or is this different?

Thanks

I live in Gainesville FL (gnv) and let me tell you it poured this morning, lightning and thunder! It stopped around 11ish. But it's still dark as heck out here. Florida is gonna have quite a few delays today.

Just to elaborate a little bit. There doesn't need to be weather at the airport for there to be weather delays. If you look at a radar image of North Florida, you would see a line of strong to severe thunderstorms extending from the Gulf of Mexico south of TLH, due east and right across the state to the Atlantic. Essentially, these storms are cutting off the standard routes of flights in and out of Central and South Florida. All of the aircraft have to be funnelled out over the Gulf or Atlantic creating a large log jam and thus the need for Ground Delay Programs and departure delays.

just looked at weathertap...tops are mostly fl300 and up with some at fl400. little hole right now down the center with tops at fl200-fl300 which the no vest birds are working. the vests/nonrafts are pushing out as far as possible on the east and west side to try to get around. see a song waay out in the gulf on a bostpa run instead of offshore east...probably cuz offside east is slammed with traffic and the storms are moving that away.

it's not rain in florida it's liquid sunshine  Smile

Actually what is causing the delays is strong storms in northern Florida and southern Georgia. Any flight going to Florida has to go right through the storms so the flights are either delaying taking off at the departure city or in a holding pattern, probably near ATL, CAE, GSP, CLT area waiting for the weather to calm down so they can fly through safely and without scaring pax half to death.

Perhaps someone could larify this for me...If an aircraft isn't equipped for overwater flight, aren't they limited to something like 50 miles offshore - so if the storms exceed that distance, can an airliner legally be routed that far out?

Non ETOPS twins must keep within 60 minutes of a suitable diversionary airport when over water. So such diversions are not likely to be a problem.

GoingBoeing:

You are correct, if they are not OW equiped, then a/c have to remain w/in 50 miles of land. Most "mainline" carriers use OW equipped a/c for Florida Ops. But many other carriers do not. I'm sure this is adding to the headaches for ZMA/ZJX...

Just got back from spotting @ FLL... tower said that the ARKES transition was closed to all traffic except those who could accept a lower cruise alt (as of about 1:30 PM local). They amended a WN departure to only cruise at FL200 (I assume it was going to MCO), and did the same for a Citation. The other traffic were told to shut down for a minimum of 40 minutes before more information would come from Center. (This included a CO 753, another Citation, FL 73G, DL 764, USA 3000 A320, and at least 10 other airplanes in the distance). The delayed flights held south of 9L on twy B, and the undisturbed flights used the north twy (I believe "A") to get to 9L for departure. The delayed flights were finally released about 50 minutes later.

I guess the weather had to do with an Alaska Airline's plan here in Tampa today. I got so excited that they decided to start service...  Embarrassment
Looking forward to the new AA

i actually just worked JFK-MCO this evening and we were put into a holding pattern over Charleston, SC for about 1/2 till we were able to make our way down to MCO. thought we'd never get there. *LOL* our last BOS-MCO flight isn't scheduled to leave BOS till after midnight. (one of our MCO rampers told me that). also he said that there were quite a few planes that were sitting on the rwy for about 3(ish) hours waiting to take off. must've sucked for the pax on board.

This flight actually cancelled because the crew timed out. The flight that makes up DL5600 arrives as DL5484 from MLB. That flight diverted to MCO inbound to MLB. All in all DL5484 didn't arrive JFK until around midnight meaning DL5600 wouldn't have gotten to PNS until around 2:30am or so.
I guess fog made the decision easier.

Delays averaging 1 hour on nearly every flight in/out of PBI yesterday. With everything booked to capacity for the holiday weekend, it was a royal pain in the ass, to say the least...lots of reroutes and misconnects.

My sister flew out of PBI on the 25th and had a 1.5 hour delay. The arriving a/c was only 20 mins. late.

Thanks for the replies on that. I wasn't sure about all the delays and didn't know where they were coming from.

Looks like today will have delays like yesterday too.

If an aircraft is only equipped for a max 50nm from the nearest shoreline, and ATC issues a clearance that will exceed that, they have to refuse the clearance.
