Future Of South Florida Airports

Sun Mar 27, 2005 7:42 am

With MIA undergoing an expansion to their AA terminal and utilizing a new northern runway for simultaneous takeoffs and landings, it does not appear they have much more area to expand. FLL seems to be very busy with expansion recently, but there does not appear to be much more room for them to go, especially with the NIMBYs complaining about using the southern runways for simultaneous takeoffs and landings. It looks like as the population shifts north, that PBI is the next obvious choice to expand, but their growth appears to be rather slow in my opinion. PBI's terminal is a lot nicer than it used to be and I know they added FlyI, SW, Canjet, Spirit, etc. over the past few years, but their frequency on UA among others leaves a lot to be desired. What is your opinion and/or prediction for growth at PBI?

Also, what are the chances that somewhere like FXE, PPM or even BCT could some day see commuter services due to the busy markets and full capacity airports in FLL and MIA?

The new MIA, when completed in 2007, will have the capacity to handle nearly 60M passengers a year. It will be a good 20 years before MIA even comes close to that figure, so no worries about space to grow.

Amazing, how times change. Back in the 60's, talk was MIA was not large enough to handle the growing South Florida aviation market and voila, the talk of the day was building the airport to outsize all airports, the Florida Jet Port. Billed as the world's biggest aviation facility, it would have been carved out of the living lake known as the Everglades. This airport would have been 50 miles South West of the Miami area. I believe, an actual runway was built. The land was the big Cypress Swamp. However, like Boeing's SST 2707, it was a day late and environmentally out of fashion and out of step. The growing concern about the Everglades ecosystem being plundered beyond repair, put an end to this grandiose project. If there is to be any future South Florida airport development besides MIA, and FLL, chances are Opa Locka, located in a supposedly nasty part of town and the old Homestead Air Force base would be likely candidates. Also, to be considered would be development South and West toward the Gulf Coast.
Back to FLL and MIA. Supposedly, FLL has grown in regard to domestic LCC carriers and MIA is still the more glamorous airport of call for International flights. Sort of like IAD and BWI. BWI being like FLL and IAD more like MIA.

Any one who is from S. Florida can tell that MIA has been under construction since it opened. I think the locals refer to it as evolving, not construction. Need to keep the corrupt government and construction companies busy.

Recently I have seen the southern runway (9R/27L) used for small turbojet aircraft such as Lears and Citations. IIRC, there used to be a limitation for that runway in the recent past which did not allow any turbojet-powered a/c to operate on it. That limitation has since been removed from the Airport/Facility Directory, and now only limits the runway to a/c with a single-wheel main gear configuration of 30,000 lbs or less, wingspan less than 78 ft, and approach speed less than 121 knots.

Personally I'm thrilled about this...I'd love to see an old Lear 21 with all her ear-piercing might give Melaleuca Gardens a run for their money!!!  hissyfit   hissyfit   laughing   rotfl

Their website really sucks, and I was unable to find any information regarding the expansion at Miami airport. Does anyone have better information?

Thanks

Here is a cool website I found w/ pics of the construction of the AA WorldGateway Terminal in Miami. These pics are dated 2002, since then a lot of the areas you see being built have been completed and look amazing!

It's too bd there aren't any sketches or plans out there that show what exactly they intend on building.

Unfortunately Thinking of Miami and Mass transit are two wholly incongruent subjects. No one ever stopped to think of the environmental re-precussions of putting as many people down there as they did. They certainly weren't thinking when they decided to make Miami the avaition gateway to the Caribbean/Latin America. Now that I don't live there anymore, I can't wait untill the whole thing falls into the water!! PS MDPD-Av SU¢KS, leave the spotters alone!

TedTAce: What are you saying? Put people down there. People decided to move no one put them there. More people wont make Miami fall into the water just make less water in Miami?
I don't know if you are serious in your statement or just sarcastic?
