International From Dresden And Leipzig?

Mon Mar 28, 2005 9:00 am

The two biggest cities in the former East germany, does Lufthansa have any direct flight to European cities from either of these airports? Both are qute highly populated and not many foreign carriers seem to serve the airports.

Is there a wealth of charters from these airports?

The economy is still pretty lousy in that region of Germany still, with Dresden and Leipzig being one of the few promising bright spots. DHL I think is moving their BRU hub to LEJ at the end of this decade. I think it will be a while before you see anything like Dresden-New York or Leipzig-DC, for example. Plus, with BBI opening up later this decade, there will most likely be ICE service from Dresden and Leipzig Hbf to BBI. I personally saw the reconstruction of the Dresden train station last July, and I'm sure it will be very nice once it's finally done.

BMI used to fly to LEJ (or was it DRS?) from LHR via CGN - and BA had a continuation of it's LHR-HAJ (before BA switched HAJ from LHR to LGW) flight on to either LEJ or DRS for a while as well... but both flights didn't survive.

Air France also doesn't operate any services from either LEJ or DRS, nor does KLM...

I guess it's the usual old dilemma: demand for Y seats is there, but C (and F) demand is not high enough to warrant nonstops from either airport.

Both have relatively good connections to FRA and MUC though, with intra-European flights being offered through those two LH hubs.

I guess this will change during the next 5 to 10 years. Both cities got over their biggest economical problems.
If BBI failed (not too unlikely), LEJ would most likely become the international airport in Eastern Germany.

The reconstruction was necessary because of the flood of the river Elbe and its confluents in August 2002. The ICE track from Dresden to Berlin passes the construction site of BBI in only a few kilometers distance. Leipzig has an ICE connection to Cologne and Frankfurt. Although neither Dresden nor Leipzig has a real high-speed connection (>200km/h).

Leipzig and Dresden are the last two big spots in Germany without a decent feed to any foreign hub. There is no BA, AF, KLM, SK and LX. Only OS has two triangle flights VIE-DRS-LEJ-VIE.

May I stand up as the only local here from DRS-Dresden.

Our airport is still what you can call a "regional" airport even when we have some more routes than other regional airports, but from a spotters view or someone who want to travel further and cheaper than with LH it's nothing here.

We have the Lufthansa flights to
MUC
FRA
HAM (operated by LH Partner C9)
DUS (operated by KIS)
STR

Germanwings to
STR
CGN

Luftfahrtgesellschaft Walther to
DTM

Cirrus Airlines with a lightly loaded Dornier 328 to
ZRH
Mannheim

Austrian Airlines to
VIE

DBA to
MUC

That's nearly the whole amount of scheduled flights.

Charter Airlines are mainly AB and DE and some foreign carriers like TunisAir, Sky Airlines, Onur Air and so on.

Not very much at the moment but may be a bit, not too much, more during the summer period.

If you have more questions about our "beloved" airport Dresden I would be glad to answer them all.

In addition - Dresden has a population of about 400.000 people.

Here's a link to the spotter-page of the airport showing actual departures and arrivals.

In German only.

And here's a shameless plug for some airport pics.
