SAA Updates Economy Class On A346

Thu Mar 31, 2005 5:54 am

What has been rumored long along has now been semi-officially confirmed in SAA's timetable. SAA will increase the average seatpitch by 2" to 33". The new timetable also shows already the new seat plans for the A340-600 and A340-300. It will take about 12-15 months for the retrofitting of the entire fleet.

Preferred seats on the new aircraft will be row 45 and seat 73D (which will judging by the seat plans) be equal to the current seat 74D.

Whats SAA current seating on the 346 & 343?

What will be the new seating on the 346 & 343 (how many seats)?

This is good news. I have heard very negative things about the seat pitch in economy on SAA's A340s. Knowing that the aircraft are being used on some of the longest flights in the world, 31" seemed awfully cruel!

The current seating is 291 in Economy Class. The new layout shows 275 seats. Business Class remains unchanged at 42. (all figures apply to the 346. I would have to look up the 343).

Well, its about time this became official. Currently the pitch is 31 inches, and it's unbelievably tight- especially when the person in front of you reclines his/her seat- then try eating while staring into that persons scalp. Anyway I'm glad the improvements are on the way Big grin

ZSSNC- where are you getting these new seat plans? I believe the ones on flysaa.com are still the old version.

Yes, the seats will remain the Recaro seats which are already installed on the aircraft. The seat pitch is increased by removing two rows of seats from the aircraft.

There is a seat plan 1A featuring the new layout for both the A340-300 and A340-600 in the summer timetable (eff. 27 March).

Not too soon for sure, IMHO. Some of the A343's are going to Jet Airways on the one side. At the same time SAA is increasing frequencies to GRU, CDG, ZRH and also starting a daily CPT-FRA service. SAA also intends to boost frequencies to LAD and LOS. Also keep the future IAD services in mind...

Having just "survived" JNB-JFK...I can tell you that SAA is a little cruel with seat pitch. I did the ATL run a few weeks ago and found the A346 was much more comfortable than the A343. Thats good news for SAA!!!!

So what's so special about the mysterious seat 74D that I've seen mentioned a few times now in posts relating to SAA and the A346?

Noticed on the SAA timetable that the SA221 LHR-CPT on 28 Dec will be an A346 rather than the usual 744. Does anyone know if this is a regular change or just seasonal?

There is no seat located in front of you, due to a service panel situated in that area. Thus you have all the legspace in the world, no one to recline into your lap and no pesky inflight-entertainment boxes to take up footspace. All at a Y-class fare.

That service panel is actually the escape hatch for the crew rest area which is below in the cargo compartment. So if there was ever a fire below and you were sitting in that seat you'd be the first to know about it!!

Can someone explain the significance of seat pitch when it comes to a 1, 2, or even 3 inch difference? I'm looking at a ruler and it doesn't even seem like 2 inches would be noticeable to anything but an ant.

SonicKidatBWI, even half an inch can be significant if the seatback in front of you is where your knees should actually be...

I have the problem that on anything at or below 31 inches (on average "slimline" seats), my knees are in constant contact with the seatback in front of me (and that's with an empty seatpocket): as soon as the person in the seat in front of me decides to recline his seat, things get nasty... for my knees...

So even one inch more is good - two or three inches are something close to a blessing.

Hope that clears it up a bit for you...

Frank
