There was another low pass not long ago there was a thread on it.
Cant remember the thread but it was an Israel airline not sure of the name but that was just as low to the fence as this one.

Not that I am aware of, at least not any crashes. There was the story of an AF pilot that allegedly clipped the fence twice; rumor has it he may have been fired after the second incident. I suppose these are accidents, since I doubt he meant to hit the fence.  Wink

I looked on Google but couldn't find any links to this story. It was out there a few months ago, though, so you may keep trying.

Hardly. but there is a small risk of debris being thrown up and hitting someone.

I don't think that is possible, however I think it is likely for the wake turbulence to make objects fly around and hurt someone.

I am not sure how many of you have seen this video - but I would venture to say take-offs are more dangerous than low approaches  Wink

It wasn't an Israeli airline but an Israeli Aviation Industries Westwind. And yes, he was low. I'd say about as low as that DC-10, maybe lower.

Hmmm, not from that range. The thrust from the engines would have sandblasted quite a few people though! IMO that is the worst part about going to the beach.

That and the chance of having a DC-10 land on top of you.  tongue

I would think SXM would be very safe, with all the people standing around all the time to notice any suspicious behavior.

That airplane was probably low enough that the sunbathers could have felt the air being pushed down on them as it was deflected by the flaps.

Because you know there are pilots out there that would risk landing their aircraft on several people just for the thrill of it...

Actually there is a blast but it's not "from the flaps". The engines, at this point, might run about 50%-60% N1 (fan speed). This creates quite a bit of jet blast on the beach as it passes overhead at 130 KIAS.

Im sure theoretically if the engines were off and it just glided in at 140 knots you would feel quite a breeze, but I have a feeling at the actual beach thats not noticible because of the engines..

My thoughts are as follows:

Setup a series of very plyable ribbons from 1' above the fence to 16' above the fence. I got $60 for the A/C crew that gets the lowest ribbon w/out touching the fence!!!

It's there, apparently the sun is a little low, and the angle from the camera is left quarter, that puts the shadow where you CAN see it in the picture, mostly obscured by other objects.

WHat would be the sink rate at that point.?
If its any where near normal sink rate the thing would have hit the fence by the time it got to it.
No matter if he applied more power the thing would continue to sink at a high rate

I have heard that people have died at this beach being crushed by the air pressure or drowned by the pressure while swimming. Does anyone know if this is actually true? I have nothing concrete to back this up.

Somehow, a DC-10 coming in that low is a little more intimidating (and makes for a more impressive photo) than a bizjet.  Smile

Just my two cents.
