Do Delta 764's Have PTV's?

Thu Mar 31, 2005 10:56 am

Do DAL 764's have PTV's? I just flew on one not too long ago and where the PTV is suppose to go there is a plastic cover. Will this a/c type eventually have PTV's? The Business Elite Cabin of the 764 has them. Thanks in adv.

The plan was there at one point, but with all the cuts it was not deemed feasable to put PTVs in coach just yet...just a minor correcton, 764s have a First class cabin, not a Biz Elite (which admittedly would be nice) its the only first class product with PTVs.

It would be nice to have a BE cabin in the 764. When the 764 began running South American routes, and started running ATL/CVG-HNL flights, I made the mention that it seemed very logical to put a BE cabin in, as ATL-HNL is longer than ATL-CDG.

The answer I got was somewhat expected. While Delta would like to put a BE cabin for comfort, the time to do it and cost are not of an advantage at this point. But more importantly, is the 764 was bought as a replacement for the L-1011, and was needed for long haul, HIGH LEISURE travel. Basically, they were saying, "We see that we could do this, but doing so would take out First Class seats, it would take out Economy Class seats, and since we can make more money on this airplane running it to Hawaii as we do, its more logical to keep in a current domestic configuration."

I understood that, otherwise they would have given Delta's L-10's the BE cabin when it was first introduced as well.

No, the 764s do not have PTVs, and the screens they do have are not very visible to some seats. I much prefer having a PTV, especially on long flights like the ones I took to Hawaii on the 764 in January. Oh well, at least I could keep the $2.00 headphones.

Nope they don't. But this what they say on this page:
http://www.delta.com/travel/before/i...seat_video/current_month/index.jsp

Our In-Seat Movies are displayed on a state-of-the-art personal entertainment system featured in every seat on some of our newer aircraft.

I think only the 777s has this in Economy.

Explore our movies and television guides to see what's featured on an aircraft near you, or read about the music and informative interviews currently playing with our in-flight radio guide. If you're traveling on the Boeing 777, explore the featured movies in the In-Seat Video section.

From their site.

As was already said, PTV's are only available in First Class on DL's 764's. However, DL does have the 764 "PTV ready" for coach. All they would need to do is put the monitors in, all the other equipment is there. So it is certainly possible in the future.

Since Delta's B767-400 fleet is used almost exclusively on domestic short-haul operations, personal TVs are in not extactly essential on these aircraft, on many routes you'd struggle to show a film. With their current financial status they are there could be little justification for a business case to install them in economy class. First Class has them to satisfy those in the premium cabin, and in my opinion that's currently sufficient for Delta.

If Delta had ordered the aircraft for their long-haul routes then I'm sure that PTVs would have been installed throughout from the outset.

The Continental/Delata comparison isn't really a fair one here.

If the rumours are true, Delta's fleet were hardwired for PTVs at production, so the cost and time of incorporating them at a later stage would be somewhat reduced.

Somewhat incorrect. DL's 764s were bought to replace the L1011 on the long-haul, high-density, low-yeild leisure markets, like ATL to HNL. While they are used on some short-hauls, like ATL-MCO, the majority of there flying is mid- to long-haul.

Skibum9,
Aside from ATL-HNL what other long-haul rotes do Delta use the B767-400 then? I thought the majority of flights were within the continental United States, with flying times of under 6 hours... I wouldn't ever classify anything with a block time of under 6 hours as long-haul.

In fact, the Flying Pig Marathon is on May 1, 2005.

But, if you mean the 732....those will be gone sometime soon, and CVG will be mostly RJs and the occasional MD-88, 738, 757 and 767.

ATL-LIM, ATL-HNL, CVG-HNL, SLC-HNL are all 6 hrs plus.

In addition to those, there are several trans-con flights DL uses them on that are over four hours long.

ATL-SFO, ATL-SEA (this summer), ATL-LAS, ATL-LAX, SLC-ATL (3.5 hrs).

Could also add SFO-HNL and HNL-LAX.

Crosswind, I don't know if there is a definitive definition of short-haul. But I would consider short haul under 2 hours. Like JKudall said, the 764 also does a lot of transcon, which would be over four hours, which I would think is mid-haul. In either case, the 764 does far more mid to long-haul than short haul. These planes are well utilized for their intended purpose. Although some would argue that they should use them for more international long haul, other than LIM.

With DL's current financial morrass, I'm sure they will also offer pay toilets very soon.
