Republic Airlines 727

Thu Mar 31, 2005 1:36 pm

North Central Airlines ordered the 727's, then they changed their name to Republic Airlines. My question is were any of the 727's painted in the new RC colors but still have the North Central name on it?

I saw the first 727 arrive in MSP but it came in the dark, they parked it at the gate, before moving to the hanger on I494. Did it have the North Central name on it, but was it changed over night or in the days following? I seem to remember it saying " NORTH CENTRAL"

Any photos?

I remember that RC did have 727's that they got from RW were repainted in the Republic livery.
I believe that by the time the first new 727 got to MSP, it was in the Republic livery. But i'm not 100% sure about that.

According to the Fall 1992 issue of "Airliners", North Central ordered 3 727-200's, but, due to the timing of the merger with Southern to form Republic, they were actually delivered to Republic, hence no NC titled 727's.

Had the chance to tour the new 727's as my mom worked for NC/RC/NW. They were most certainly delivered after the merger with Southern.

Do you mean the double bold cheatline of aqua/blue? or the maroon and gray?

Didn't some (if not all) of the Hughes Airwest 727 fleet get painted in aqua/blue of RC, and then going straight to NW? I know there were some 727s that acquired Wolf's red/maroon.

Republic did paint most of the 727's in the Mary Tyler Moore scheme. In fact, I think they painted them all in the newer scheme.

Republic did not get the 727's in the North Central scheme. They recieved most of the 727's from Hughes Airwest. I asked my old man about the North Central 727's, and he said they did not come in at the time of the merger.

If I recall, Republic had a few 727-100's? I could have sworn, but perhaps I flew on a NW 727-100.

Republic's 727 fleet were all -200 advanced airplanes. They had I believe 13 727s. About half were ex-Hughes Airwest 727-2M7s, and the rest were new-build 727-2S7s. I believe Boeing gave the S7 code to North Central, but then it became the de facto Republic code, evidenced in their 757-2S7s.

The bottom line is that there were two fleets, the ex-RW and the RC airplanes. There were no NC delivered birds. Nor were there any -100s (the Air West airplanes were all gone by then).

North Central fan and collector here! I will say that I have in my possession a doctored, Boeing image, of a "North Central" 727. It's true, they sadly never appeared in NC livery as the merger happened to become RC. Aircraft makers were known to make up doctored images to show to clients as to how "their" plane would look if ordered. This image is a photo of a 727 inflight looking like it is nose to tail a Herman bird all the way. I saw it at a show and thought, "THAT'S A RARE FIND! I'VE GOT TO HAVE IT NOW!!!" The only drawback is that it is in black and white. It was still worth having for the big NC fan that I am!  Wink

NW did have a few 727-100's (seven I believe) in the mid eighties when I worked there. They all came from the pre merger NW.
