Airbus A380 To Land At BIA

Mon Apr 04, 2005 11:18 am

The largest aircraft in the world-Airbus A380, which upto now eluded flights to Sri Lanka due to non-availability of required `aprons' (parking bays), have agreed to land at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) from next year.

To overcome the shortcoming, four parking slots were constructed at the airport. All this time, BIA had only 17 parking slots. But, these slots did not allow parkings for the larger category aircraft including the A380s. As a result the larger aircraft did not land here. Airport officials said this had deprived valuable foreign exchange earnings for the country.

What airlines would be flying A380 to BIA? And which airlines currently serve BIA?

Maybe Sri Lankan could take advantage of their location and operate A380s to Europe and Australia. So much traffic on this route goes through Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, and the Middle East that another routing would be more than welcome, and if they got the price right it could be a BIG money-spinner for them.

It's an extraordinarily poorly-written article. It seems to state that Airbus itself is going to commence flights to BIA, as though AI determined what routes the airlines fly!

Anyway, it does say later in the day that it's Emirates that will be flying there with the A380, but I really don't see how the writer comes to that conclusion. There's no comment from Emirates or any other airline. The substance of the story just seems to be that Airbus officials came to have a look at the airport to suggest necessary changes, etc. Perhaps the A380 will fly there on a test flight and the journalist completely misunderstood this intention.
Next flight.... who knows.

Are you sure? I thought it was the AN-225. The A380 may be the largest passenger plane.

The title of the thread had me confused for a mo' there.......an A380 to BIA???? I knew AF occasionally use 747s to AJA during the summer peak, but a 380 to BIA would be over doing things.....  Big grin

From reading this poorly written article I get the impression that the parking bays were built for large aircraft in general, and since they were already building it, they went ahead and made it big enough to accomodate the largest commercial aircraft. Makes sense.

Let's be careful with airport codes, please.

BIA is officially Bastia in France.
BIA is unofficially and often incorrectly Beirut International Airport, which is really BEY.

I think the airport code you are referring to is CMB, Colombo Bandaranaike
Airport.

Other than UL, current airlines are:
9W to MAA
CX to BKK, SIN, HKG
DE to FRA
EK to CGK, DXB, MLE, SIN
EY to AUH
G9 to SHJ
IC to MAA
KU to KWI
LT to MUC
MH to KUL
OK to DXB, MLE, PRG
PK to KHI
QR to DOH, MLE
RJ to AMM
S2 to BLR, MAA
SQ to SIN

Question...I know the A380 flight is this week...can somebody specify a precise date? The last time an event like this happened was 36 years ago, and i want to make sure I don't miss this.
