ASA Delta Connection Files For SLC-SJD

Wed Apr 06, 2005 8:46 am

It appears Delta wants to keep the SLC-SJD service year round. ASA has filed with the DOT to fly from SLC-SJD (Los Cabos, Mex) beginning sometime around June 1st.

Originally, Delta had planned to do seasonal SLC-SJD service using mainline equipment. But it appears they want to use the CR7 during the off season.

Just some facts: SLC-SJD is 1224 miles (about a 3hr flight)

Delta also recently announced they were going to switch SLC-CUN to daily year round 738 service.

This will probably workout great for them as the majority of tourists at cabo come from cold places. I am so excited that Delta is starting operations at Burbank airport from SLC and ATL, which means that I will be able to see Delta 757 and Delta Connection CRJs up close.

I would not want to fly on a CR7 for three hours to get to Cabo. There are other choices, such as AS, that would be much more comfortable. Also, I would think that there are lots of carry-ons and heavy luggage from tourists spending the week, that the CR7 might hinder the amount of space for these items, but I could be wrong. I'm sure the route will do well nonetheless as SJD continues to grow.

Mesa does DEN-ATL for United Express using a CRJ-700, so 3 hour flights in an RJ are not that uncommon. Just be glad it isn't on a EMB-145XR, now that would suck......

There is no difference between a CRJ seat and a 737 seat at least for America West. Infact, I enjoyed the CRJs comfort more than the 737s. I could see myself doing a 3 hour flight on a CRJ700 or 900. Its true that they don't fit moderate carryon bags but they have plenty of space in the cargo hold.

Why isn't Skywest flying this route?

Quoting LGAtoIND (Reply 5):

Because SkyWest doesn't have 70 seaters on the Delta side yet (no plans right now either).

Sounds like a good idea to keep the service year-round and daily. Delta did the same on ATL-PLS. Used to be a seasonal saturday-only 738, but Delta decided to upgrade that to a daily year-round CR7, and it works out. SLC-SJD should work out as well, given all the feed from sun-starving Northwesteners  Silly .

Mesa is flying the CR9 to Cabo as well. The CRJ's are not the greatest plane to fly down there, but do what it takes from the airline stand! Passengers don't know the difference till after they get on the plane. Then they scream " Whats the hell is this plane?"

Has anyone been to Cabo lately? That place has blown up. SJD is going to need to expand very soon. Its incredible how busy its become in the last 5 years. I have been working flights there (SFO-SJD) and have had to put on as much fuel as possible just knowing that we may not be able to get fuel at SJD. Well, not without a delay. Between all the commercial flights and Biz jets, wow!
