Ok, am I the only one who finds the detail on gate, runway, and taxiway use and layout fascinating?

How old are the maps? I noticed DEN's 6th runway is still under construction:
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=den&t=k&hl=en
And I noticed my mistake, if you just change the airport code in the search bar, it doesn't update the url (at least in Firefox).

ATL has no sign of a 5th runway:

Man... I'm having too much fun...

Look at LGA, you can see what looks like a USAir (EMB-145) ready for take off on runway 31 and on 22 American Airlines (MD-82) just landed....  Cool

Not until you mentioned it. Good catch.

But so is the supreme court house!

The white house is a cut out. There is no detail except its well known outline.

I'm obsessed by this tool. Help me!

Odd that they got rid of the White House.
BTV is in beautiful detail by the way, you acn actually see a US Airways ERJ-145 pushing from the gate, a jetBlue A320 on Runway 33 ready to go.

Here's CLE:

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=cle&ll...86&spn=0.023646,0.035491&t=k&hl=en

This one can't be more than 2 or so years old. It shows stage one of 6L/24R open, but the rest of it under construction. It even shows what must be one of those Saudi oil baron 747SPs parked by the IX Jet Center!

Neat! Mapquest once had something similar, but for CLE the map was Years old (pre concourse D) and was in black and white. This one is newer and in color.

Your security clearance must not be high enough.  Wink

Seriously - I find it incredible that this resolution is available to the public for free over the internet. Go back 15 years ago and many of our military commanders would have killed for this sort of detail.

Anyone remember when US troops invaded Grenada and had to rely on tourist maps to find the key landmarks.

The wonders never cease!

Does Google really use Satellite Data or are they using the same high resolution aerial photographs that Terraserver uses?

what kind of business was it with the US troops in grenada? another threat to world peace? - just kidding -  Smile

honestly, the quality of the images is not that high. i heard from contracts which prohibit the publishing of satelite images in higher resolution to the genneral public. most of the satelites (specially those for scientific purposes Big grin ) can take pictures as close as a pocket camera...

Actually, it is the same plane. You can see where the camera took a new picture. The reason it looks misaligned is because it has taken off and the cameras are taking pictures from angles, not straight down. I caught something similar looking at ORD. The southern most runway, I didn't look to see which one, has a turbo prop on it twice.

The San Francisco, St Louis and Chicago pics seem to be the same aerials (i.e. not satellite) as Terraserver. New York may be a mix of satellite and aerial; I haven't looked at Los Angeles yet but I'll bet it's aerial too.

Keyhole is now owned by Google. Many of these images are several years out of date, as exampled by the ATL 5th runway project (Nearly all of the buildings in the image were torn down by late 2001.), another being Las Vegas (Where the Wynn Las Vegas is now sitting, it is still a claered patch from where the Desert Inn used to sit.).

In terms of things being blocked out or blurred, all millitary installations I look at are at least somewhat obscured.

If you want to see planes taking off and landing, take a look at the runways at ATL!

If you think this is cool, download the free trial of Keyhole (and buy it if you want, it's only about $30). It's by far the coolest mapping/directions program around, even though it still has a few bugs.

If you're interested in seeing British airports, go to...

www.multimap.com

Select the UK.

...and type in the names.

Alternatively paste in the postcodes;
London Heathrow. UB3 5AP
London Gatwick. RH6 ONP
Manchester. M90 1QX
Liverpool. L24 1YD

First it'll show you the map, which you can then click on 'Aerial Photo' and zoom in on the airports.
