400 Jobs Leaving UAL Call Center

Thu Apr 07, 2005 4:48 am

http://www.kingcountyjournal.com/sited/story/html/203390

Snip...........Green said United will be rerouting incoming calls to its Kent call center to the company's other reservation centers, which include centers in Mexico City and Dublin, Ireland. ``We also use third-party vendors that have call centers in Canada and India,'' the airline spokesman said.......end

Once again how is this outsourcing good for the United States??????....Oh by the way......I am one of those 400.

Oh lord... to the call center in Dublin? Sorry to all you people accross the Atlantic from over here - but the people in Dublin really aren't the fittest I've ever had the dubious pleasure of talking to...

Rsmith6621a, sorry to hear that you're one of those that'll lose their jobs - keep your chin up, and most of us will keep our fingers crossed for you to find something new soon.

Being out of a job isn't fun - my last experience with that started almost precisely to the day one year ago, but by mid April, I had a new job lined up, and I'm enjoying a lot to this day (and I don't see that changing anytime soon).

Good luck to you, and to the 399 other unlucky ones.

Regards,
Frank

For the most part, airline call centers are going the way of the City Ticket Office. Airlines will still have them, but just not in the numbers they used to. With more and more people booking tickets online, the need for many call centers has been reduced, as has the need for CTOs. With some airlines charging to do a booking by phone (I'm surprised some airlines haven't resorted to using long distance #s or 1-900 numbers for their res lines), that shows that the call centers will soon be for rebookings and any other flight-related issues after the ticket has been purchased.

What I don't get is how does United Airlines have a call center in India when it doesn't even fly to India.

Sorry to hear that. The article said you guys moved into that place in 2000. Where was the older res center located? I had to drive up to SEA medical yesterday. I have a feeling the internal med departments will be closing down soon also.

Sorry to hear the news, and it's impact on you. Back in mid-80s, when I was still new to the industry, I started working at a corporate travel agency in Seattle. Everyone's goal at the agency was to get enough experience so that they could then try and get on at United Res. Once you got into res, you were set (or so we thought).

Good luck getting a transfer. If you've got airlines in your blood, leaving the industry can be tough.

I am really sorry for the 400+ employees affected by yet another cheap shot by UAL. Just send the jobs overseas. Sorry, I just get peeved when I see so many lives affected. Nice to see UAL's Chief get a fat bonus. Now we know who suffers for it.

Airline call centers have been dwindling in the past
several years due to the internet online bookings.
When I worked for a major airline in 1988, we had
10 call centers, seems like the average today is 4 or 5
for each major airline. Wonder which airline has the
largest Res center, seems like they average several
hundred people in each location. DL in Atlanta?
AA in DFW? who has the largest call center?
Thanks.

Sorry to hear that your job is gone, RSmith. After watching traditional travel agents get squeezed out, the creation of Orbitz by the major airlines, ETKTs, and UA's troubles, you didn't see it coming? I figured that after the travel agents were reduced to working without commissions, res would be next. If you think about it, it's more expensive to pay you salary and benefits that to pay a travel agent a 0% commission now. I don't want to appear to kick you while you are down, sorry if that came across as harsh. You should be eligible for retraining programs, etc, from the WA Dept of Labor. Take advantage of any programs you'll be eligble for. One door might be closing, but another will open, I have no doubt!

My wife's employer operates call centers all over the world for many companies, although I don't think they handle any airline reservation work. The hot areas are India, the Phillipines, and Nova Scotia, Canada.

You want to know how? Read THOMAS FRIEDMAN's new book "The World Is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-first Century." He is the Op-Ed writer of the NY Times. He explains it better than anyone. Did you get a chance to see CHARLIE ROSE interview him on April 6, 2005 on PBS? If not, try to get that videp tape. You will understand where the world is going... the world is no longer vertical with the US on the top, but rather countries are catching up to us. Just read the book. Fantastic!

Landing rights? In case you have not read recently try to take a look at the new bilateral agreement between the U.S. and India. No such deals are necessary. And you said you work in the aviation business?

I did work there in 1998/1999 before moving back to AMS......... The problem we had there was that nobody stayed long enough to become highly skilled. Many persons just saw it as a year abroad working experience... I would have stayed if Dublin had a better climate and was not so expensive to live in.

Rssmith,

Sorry to hear the bad news. I guess that this must be why I have been having so much trouble getting through to UA in the past couple of days. Are they cutting people at the P.E. and 1K call desks as well? Good luck buddy.

While we've had our disagreements in the past, I'm VERY sorry to hear about your job situation. I certainly hope you're able to stay with UA as you've mentioned. If not, AS is always in need of talented people in the SEA area. I'll keep my eyes peeled for any new openings that might be a good fit for you.

Best regards,

I'm very sorry to hear that SEARR is closing since I had hoped to transfer there myself. I had hoped they would have closed my office....I started in LAXRR and want to get back to Los Angeles or to the West Coast.

Good luck in finding a new job ! Too bad you will furlough...Best of luck to you and especially my former collegues from LAXRR that went to SEARR.

Ouch...

As a former res supervisor who lost my job in late December (although it was a different situation: I had to quit after another never-ending discussion with my parents about working on holidays), I know that feeling...

Good luck to you and the rest of the employees.

Sorry to hear the bad news.

I can see outsourcing from a number of different angles and do believe this is a complex issue for America to deal with.

As far as UAL is concerned, I don't understand why they would be hiring in HNL (a high cost market) but be closing other shops. Has UA already consolidated their res functions?

HNL works good with their timezone. They are 3 hours behind the west coast and 6 hours behind the east coast.

United is a global corporation serving customers on almost every continent. It would be a silly business decision NOT to use human resources from around the world.

LCCs and bankruptcy are forcing United to cut costs in order to survive. These decisions are tough, but necessary. It may not be good for you, personally, but on a macro level, it makes sense.

Best to you.

Also the State of Hawaii is giving them Tax Breaks because they are helping the Hawaiian economy.
